Traveling abroad after filing I-751, but before GC expires

My earliest filing date is 08/11/15. We have not filed yet. Not sure how to proceed.. I will have to travel abroad from 09/09-09/23. Should I wait to file until I get back, say on 09/24? Worried that if I file now, I will have to wait for the notice of receipt for the form stating that "Your alien card is extended one year - employment and travel authorized". To travel. Or will I still be able to travel with my GC and only need the extension letter for travel after 11/09/15 when my GC expires? I know the instructions here on VJ say it's prudent to file fairly early in the 90-day window, so I'd really appreciate any advice! Thanks!

You only need the extension letter / NOA to travel after your green card actually expires.

Given your timeline it really doesn't matter if you file now or wait to file until you return, given that you have until November to do so.

Awesome!! Thanks for your reply! We might as well apply and get it over with then :)

Typically you are scheduled for a biometrics appointment one month after they process your application so take that into consideration of when to file based on your travel plans. You don't want to have the biometrics appointment scheduled while you are outside the country.
