I have a job and good credit. I am just waiting for my GC. Can you lease/finance a vehicle with an EAD card or do you need a GC?

Thanks

In our experience, you'll need a green card. While you're in AOS with an EAD, you essentially have no visa (you're just in authorized stay). The dealership would not give my husband a loan since the loan would (long) outlive the expiration date on his EAD. The car is in my name only.

Thanks ChicagoSarah

Did it mean you had to get it insursed under both of your names? Is there an option to change the name over once he got his GC?

We are both on the insurance (we have State Farm if that matters). We haven't tried to change it to his name, but I imagine it'd be a hassle to do. We focused on other ways to build credit and show co-mingling of finances and not to worry about the car.

I would also suspect the non US person will have a hard time obtaining a lease period since you have no credit history here in the US. I initially had issues similar to this.

I got a SCN within the first week of being here and obtained a credit card shortly after so I have been building credit slowly. I am also paying for something monthly as well which has helped. My credit isn't the issue as its just below 700, its the fact I haven't got a GC yet and many places don't recognize an EAD card.

Why not just phone and ask the folks you want to lease the car from? Their department which draws up lease can tell you the rules I expect.

Each lender will have their own rules

Yes it is easy to lease or finance a vehicle without a GreenCard.
