Travelling with or without daughter on entry

My friend is going through the process of migration through his wife who is a GC holder. Interview is Aug 19th. He has a seventeen year old who is attached to the filing. Two questions:

1. Can he do the initial entry into the US alone and his daughter follow months later or do they have to enter together?

2. Is there a limitation as to how long after landing they have to remain in the country before travelling back out?

All this as to do with he wants her to finish out her semester in school before coming here permanently.

1. Yes. His daughter can enter any time later during the validity of her immigrant visa. (If she doens't come until after the visa expires she would have to get a new immigrant visa.)

Yes she can enter after him but I'd say do it in 5 mths, then she can return & finish the semester with no prob

coupla things to note:

1. when the visa packet arrives from the IV Unit - is it two separate visa packets or one?

2. note the dates printed in the visa foil - those are the dates in which travel is authorized into the USA.

if it's 1 visa packet on 2 people, you can:

1. travel together or

2. go back to the IV Unit, ask to separate the 1 visa packet on 2 humans into 2 visa packets on 2 humans.

re: turn-around -

can get on an outgoing flight the same day, as an endorsed visa morphs into a temp I-551 document with a duration of 1 year.
