WASHINGTON – An awkward situation has arisen for the GOP after photographs picturing Josh Duggar with party heavyweights Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker went into wide circulation, placing the Republicans’ top players in close association with Duggar, currently embroiled in a nasty underage sex abuse allegation scandal from his teenage years.

Duggar, the oldest offspring of reality TV stars Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar responded to a tabloid report accusing him of molesting several underage girls by stating he “acted inexcusably” and was “deeply sorry” for what he called his “wrongdoing.” According to a police report, some of the five girls Duggar was accused of groping were his own sisters, and the crime was allegedly covered up by the family for at least a year.

Fallout from the sex abuse accusation has produced a new litany of demands for cancellation of TLC’s 19 Kids And Counting, while at the same time, Duggar defenders explain that the alleged molestations were “a phase” and continue to praise the 27-year old father of three (with one on the way) for taking responsibility and apologizing for a series of “youthful indiscretions.”

Predictably, anti-Duggar forces accuse the family and those in the “pro-Duggar” camp of hypocrisy, employing double standards by giving Josh Duggar a pass, and excusing his teenaged behavior.

Another high profile, ex-TLC “family” member, June “Mama June” Shannon, formerly of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo demanded the cancellation of the Duggar’s show. Boo Boo was abruptly axed in October 2014 after photos surfaced of Shannon with a convicted child molester who was previously sent to jail for allegedly molesting one of Shannon’s own daughters. “Hell No”, remarked Shannon. Many social media commenters also are criticizing the vastly different way TLC is reacting to the Duggar molestation scandal, as compared to the Honey Boo Boo sexual abuse allegations.

Meanwhile, potential damage to the GOP and its image now will be closely scrutinized, according to a Washington-based GOP poll-watcher. “It will be a thin line to tiptoe across. Defending someone with police reports listing molestation as the charge is political suicide, and you’d have to be a complete imbecile to do such a thing.” Apparently the poll-watcher is not aware that declared Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee has come out in support of Duggar.

“Governor Walker doesn’t have to worry,” commented one anonymous aide. “And as far as Gov. Palin goes,” chuckled the aide, “well, there’s no such thing as bad publicity in her book. She’s bullet-proof. Besides, people have their pictures taken all the time. Governor Walker beat a recall election. This thing? This is kid stuff. Nothing to see here, folks.”

The aide continued, “Cruz and Paul can probably get ahead of this mess by saying something like ‘forgive the sinner but not the sin!’ The public has a very short memory, and besides, it’s only an Instagram.”

So it would seem that the distancing game has begun as possible negative political consequences mount. On Thursday, Duggar resigned his position with the Family Research Council where he served as executive director of the conservative organization’s lobbying arm, FRC Action.

This has proven to be the tip of an iceberg that will ultimately sink 19 Kids, the family’s flagship enterprise, and not just a ripple in a pond? The final fate of one of TLC’s most successful franchises still remains in jeopardy, as no final decision has been made as to whether 19 Kids And Counting will return to the airwaves.

Public opinion – the ultimate deciding factor – once again, spoke loudly and clearly.

I'm thinking about the truism that the most virulent homophobes turn out to have deep issues that they so adamantly insist are inherent in the gay community. 14 is old enough to understand that it's wrong to fondle your sisters bumpy bits and furry tacos.
