help....scared :(

Ok if anyone is into houses etc and lives where there is ice and wind...I need help!!! :help: :help:

All night long, about once an hour or sometimes more, in my kitchen all of a sudden I hear a loud BUMP. Sounds like when my cat jumps from on top of the fridge to the floor...but each time I check the cat is no where in the kitchen...she's sleeping soundly on my down comforter in my bedroom on the other side of the house.

I looked out on my porch, which is attached to the kitchen, and there's about two or three inches of snow sealed in thick ice and my porch furniture is secured inside all that snow and ice so it's not that that is doing the THUMP noise.

I don't have an automatic ice maker so it's not like a big clump of ice is falling into a bucket.

I did go down cellar and one room that is close to being underneath the kitchen has water in it now and I had the electric heat on in that room so I turned it off thinking maybe that was doing some electric bumping noise...but since I turned it off it's done it three times.

I have never heard this noise other than when the cat jumps from the fridge to the floor. EVER.

When it gets very cold and windy and icy here my house makes all kinds of freaky noises. Scares the #$%^ outta me lol Loud cracks and bumps, sometimes sounds like the roof is breaking. Are your pipes ok and the furnace running fine?

We have lovely coldness in our house too now - we're in Minnesota, the land of the "dead if out for more than ten minutes" brigade. I've learnt to ignore the wierd noises my house makes (unless it's an ear-splitting crunch or something like that!), because if I didn't, I would never get any sleep!

It's probably just something in your house expanding - do you ahve forced air heating? If so, the metal ducts will shrink and cool in between heating cycles. When the thing switches back on, the metal and anything surrounding it will expand and that can cause all sorts of funny noises. It'll be alright - you'll figure it out

I don't think I have a fan thing in the attic.....and i wouldn't even know how to get up there to look. Does everyone have one ?

Oil burner is working fine I think since there's heat and hot water. Pipes are ok I think since water is coming out of the faucet.

the only other thing I can think of is that maybe I have a tree over my roof and a big icicle is dropping down on my roof or something. I don't remember if I have a tree that goes over my roof though. I'll go look.

ok...I opened the kitchen door and then tried to open the screen door and it's iced in so I'm gonna assume it's a tree dropping icicles or something.

At least I can be sure it's not someone trying to break in 'cause they'd be pretty silly to keep trying all night long.

oh i read that one wrong....i didn't see that you said what turns off and on. lol. my heat turns off and on i think 'cause every so often i'll hear this "click click click" and then it will get all warm. Other than that the fridge gets a kickstart or something every so often 'cause I'll hear it get loud and then quiet.

I'm not scared anymore. Thanks guys!! lol. I really was freakin. I can't wait for my husband to get here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'd have sent him outside to figure it out!

When there's too much load on the roof, the doors stick. It's a sign that you need to remove some snow from up there.

I never heard of that before. I do remember when I was married to my ex about 11 years ago he and his brothers had to go on top of each of their family members roofs to shovel the snow off. That is the first time I ever heard of shoveling snow off of a roof!!! This is our first snow and we only got a few inches so I don't think that's the problem, though the ice could be weighing it down. In any event I'm not gonna be climbing up there anytime soon so I'll just live with the intermittent BUMP. lol
