ARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina (AP) - The Bosnian teen who killed five shoppers at a Salt Lake City mall fled the war in his homeland at age 10, neighbors and friends said Wednesday.Sulejman Talovic, an 18-year-old immigrant fatally shot by police after Monday's rampage, was only 4 when he and his mother fled their village of Talovici on foot after Serbian forces overran it in 1993, people close to the family told The Associated Press.

Talovic lived as a refugee in Bosnia from 1993 to 1998, when his family moved to the United States, they said.

During that period, he spent some time in Srebrenica, the northeastern enclave where up to 8,000 Muslim men and boys were slaughtered in 1995 by Serb forces loyal to former Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic. It was the worst massacre of civilians since World War II.

The teen gunman left Srebrenica two years before the massacre, but acquaintances suggested it may have left an indelible mark on the quiet little boy they knew.

"That's why I'm convinced the war did this in Utah," said Murat Avdic, a friend of the family. "There cannot be any other reason."

Avdic, 54, said that when the village of Talovici fell, the family split.

"Sulejman and his mother walked to Srebrenica, and from there were later evacuated by a U.N. convoy," he said.

"Suljo, the father, headed over the mountains and forests with his comrades as well. Many left the village, but only a few made it."

Avdic described the family as "very normal, very decent and quiet."

Up to 200,000 people were killed and 1.8 million others lost their homes in Bosnia's 1992-95 war.

I wonder if Sulejman was a member of a radical sect of Islam?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

So do you have sympathy for the victims at the mall or the shooter?

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I have sympathy for the innocent victims at the mall of course. The people who survived WWII in Europe witnessed horrible atrocities but I don't recall hearing that they gunned down anyone.

I think that teenagers these days have so much pent up aggression and something needs to be done about it. I don't know what but I mean we just had a school shooting here near Boston a few weeks ago and they're getting more and more common. What's up with that??

I wonder if Sulejman was a member of a radical sect of Islam?

What religion were the ones who did the shooting in Columbine?

I had training on the Columbine High School shooting for work. The kids were Roman Catholic, but they were influenced by Goth music and culture. The documentary was hard to much.

It's really sad. I mean my kids are 9 and 10 and knowing what happened here just a few weeks ago they have been having nightmares of someone coming into their school and shooting kids. :(

I hardly call kids like that religious..

Does not anyone seriously wonder so many people are screwed up here. There are so many video games that are flat out banned in so many countries yet kids here are allowed to play them. So many movies that are about death and torture on TV.. There is a whole generation into the goth scene or into listening to rappers talking about killing this and that person.. Just seriously look at the utter ####### kids are exposed to. It does not take a genius or a psychiatrist to figure out that exposure to that sort of stuff, without a proper upbringing or foundation, will mess with a kids mind..

The religion of the columbine shooters is not killing innocents on a daily basis. :dead: You pick one incident several years ago. I can pick several incidents TODAY from that 'other' religion.

I hope you wake up before it's too late.

"Psychological Effects of Combat"

The Trauma of Close-Range, Interpersonal Aggression

During World War II, the carnage and destruction caused by months of continuous German bombing in England and years of Allied bombing in Germany was systematically inflicted in order to create psychological casualties among civilian populations. Day and night, in an intentionally unpredictable pattern, civilians, relatives, and friends were mutilated, killed and their homes were destroyed. These civilian populations suffered fear and horror of a magnitude that few humans will ever experience.

This unpredictable, uncontrollable reign of shock, horror, and terror is exactly what psychiatrists and psychologists prior to World War II believed to be responsible for the vast numbers of psychiatric casualties suffered by soldiers in World War I. And yet, incredibly, the Rand Corporation's Strategic Bombing Study published in 1949 found that there was only a very slight increase in the psychological disorders in these populations as compared to peacetime rates and that these occurred primarily among individuals already predisposed to psychiatric illness. These bombings, which were intended to break the will of the population, appear to have served primarily to harden the hearts and increase the determination to fight among those who endured them.

The impact of fear, physiological arousal, horror, and physical deprivation in combat should never be underestimated, but it has become clear that other factors are responsible for psychiatric casualties among combatants. One of those factors is the impact of close-range, interpersonal, aggressive confrontation.

Through roller-coasters, action and horror movies, drugs, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, scuba diving, parachuting, hunting, contact sports, and a hundred other means, modern society pursues fear. Fear in and of itself is seldom a cause of trauma in everyday peacetime existence, but facing close-range interpersonal aggression and hatred from fellow citizens is a horrifying experience of an entirely different magnitude.

The ultimate fear and horror in most modern lives is to be raped, tortured, beaten, or physically degraded in front of loved ones or to have the sanctity of the home invaded by aggressive and hateful intruders. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association affirms this when it notes that, "Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) . . . may be especially severe or longer lasting when the stressor is of human "design." PTSD resulting from natural disasters such as tornadoes, floods, and hurricanes is comparatively rare and mild, but acute cases of PTSD will consistently result from torture or rape. Ultimately, like tornadoes, floods, and hurricanes, bombs from 20,000 feet are simply not "personal" and are significantly less traumatic to both the victim and aggressor.

Goths appear to be more of a danger to themselves, than others.

Being from Bosnia may be a small factor. Although, I've found that many refugees from that conflict are pacifists. It could be American xenophobia that made him feel isolated? Teenage rebellion? The availability of guns in America? American culture is also very violent in nature.

Terrible tragedy ... but not unexpected.
