WHAT DOES MAY 1st HAVE TO DO WITH HOW MANY HOURS YOU WORK AND ARE PAID? On Saturday, May 1, 1886, thousands of American workers went on strike demanding "an 8-hour day with no cut in pay." The move for an 8-hour work day evolved into the federal legal requirement, enacted in 1938, that employers pay overtime – 50 percent more pay, “time-and-a-half” – for every hour put in beyond a 40-hour workweek.

But regulations over who’s eligible for overtime pay haven’t been adjusted for inflation in decades. Nowadays you don’t qualify if you’re salaried and earn more than $23,600. Yet if we had the same overtime threshold we had 40 years ago, adjusted for inflation, everyone (including salaried workers) now earning up to $69,000 a year would be eligible. This would add more than 10 million workers to the number now getting overtime pay.
How to make this happen? No need to wait for Congress. It’s within the power of my old department, the Department of Labor, to make this change, and within the power of the President to order it. Hopefully he will, and soon. Maybe even today. What better way to celebrate May 1?

i would't hold my breath for obama to order it. maybe i'll just sacrifice a white baby boy to the commie alter instead. :devil:
