So I just pulled apart my application to see what is missing. They sent back everything- supposedly. WELL NOPE. Most things are included such as my notarized copy of my birth certificate, notarized copy of her passport, notarized copy of her health card, all the forms etc. HOWEVER I received a copy of her birth certificate back but not the notarized copy of it. And they sent back a photocopy of the BACK of our marriage certificate. They did not send back the copy of the front OR the notarized copy of both! Seriously?!!?? I obviously sent them. There's no way I'd just randomnly send a copy of the back of a form for no reason. Siiiiiiiiigh. So, I am going to re-copy and re-notarize those two documents, then BEFORE I mail it back, I am going to call and find a person to talk to / interrogate as to how to prevent it from happening again.

What kind of a processing center is that anyway... are there giant fans blowing papers off desks or something?!?!?

Actually, it is not that hard for parents outside of the USA as diplomatic missions offers assistance to prepare/review the package. Citizenship and Immigration Canada just removed this service for the US a couple of years ago and are not providing any way to contact them live. :/

I have heard people having success with contacting their previous member of parliament and the office of the Minister; not fun to get lower services as Canadians just because of where you emigrated to.

OK so I'm back to say that I was right but also wrong. I went to UPS today to get the copies notarized and was told they are not allowed to notarize vital records (Marriage, birth) because they are only copies of the original held by the government. I must have been told this last time so because I couldn't get them notarized I mailed in copies of the documents instead.

I was right in that they lost some papers - they lost the front of our marriage certificate and the back of the birth certificate and didn't send either back. However I was wrong as I guess I didn't send a notarized copy because I couldn't.

So, long story short, looks like I have to send original certified copies of the marriage/birth certificate instead of just photocopies. Thankfully not to hard to order.

I wonder if they send any documents back after processing a package.

Grumble. I feel a little silly but I'm still annoyed anyway - they could have been a little more helpful instead of a generic 'something is missing' letter and they did misplace some of my copied documents.

At least I think I might have success on my third attempt. Hope this is helpful to someone else.

And Boston-Montreal I had no idea - sure would be nice to have assistance.

Alright, mailed off my application yesterday. Sent our original certified copy of marriage certificate and her birth certificate instead of just copies. Hopefully the third time's the charm!

Well, a month and a half later I got a letter from Canada Citizenship and Immigration. With great excitement and trepidation I opened the envelope to see that they have officially acknowledged receipt of my application for my daughter's citizenship.

Well, IT DIDN'T GET RETURNED TO ME THIS TIME! WOOHOO! A month and a half to get a receipt for applying seems kind of silly though. They gave me a link to track the status of my application and processing times online at least. Time to investigate and I'll keep you posted.

Our second daughter is due in a month. The rate this is going I will apply for her citizenship and still not know about my first daughter's application :P

So I just went to www.cic.gc.ca and looked up the processing times. From receipt of the application (aka what I got today) the total processing time is now 5 months. So that makes it what..... November? Maybe? Hooray. I suppose I could technically apply for baby #2 before then, but I am not going to bother until I'm sure my first daughter's one works out - no point in repeating any errors!

Glad they didn't return it this time. Every time I see this I remember I need to do it still. I can't remember anything these days!

BTW Ontarkie, any thoughts on this article about 'second class citizenship' ? Trying to read between the lines on how it might impact our kids since they weren't born in country. It sounds very negative but I am not sure it would actually affect them at all.

Yikes, so all my kids and myself are now second class citizens. I don't think I like this at all, will have to read more into this and hope I'm understanding it right.

Yes at the moment that is how it's written, but we know how well they are at adding things.

Another thing even if you never apply for US citizenship anyone that immigrated here is eligible to apply for US citizenship either by the 3 or 5 yr rule, so then that makes everyone second class citizens too.
