Word comparisons

Hi,

Just starting this fun thread. I find myself asking what do you call that thing? Over in the US names for some items are different than in the UK. Can you think of any comparisons? Here is an example of some of the comparisons that I have to adjust to US followed by UK.

Pants = Trousers

Chips = crisps

Fries = chips

Sneakers = trainers

Faucet = tap

Weed whacker = strimmer

Rubber boots = wellies

Just a few to start you off. Weird the difference in words isn't it?

Deep Fryer- Chip Pan, well thats what hubby calls it

tags=license plates

soda/pop =soft drinks

restroom=washroom

tea=sweet iced tea - you need to ask for hot tea specifically

snitch=grass (Still don't get this one)

To be a touch dirty, the following aren't naughty in the States:

knob

fanny (I still get giggles imagining old Southern ladies named Fanny in London)

bloody

and a backwards peace sign just means your a dork as opposed to meaning f*** off!

Does 'grass' come from 'snake in the grass' maybe?

Grass can be said for smoking pot too, as in smoking the grass, do you think people used to smoke actual grass? Lol. I was thinking about the word fanny lol, makes me laugh when people say "sit on your fanny" over here.
