When we returned from Thailand in august,2014 we spent 2 hours in the "secondary" room, (Chicago,O`hare) after a 14 and a half hour flight. The wife just returned from Thailand last Friday, (Chicago,O`hare again) and spent 1and a half hours in the "secondary" room and was this time questioned before being allowed to depart immigration, while procedures may vary airport to airport and O`hare is a busy airport, we just wanted to give a heads up and for people to be aware of potential delays if booking connecting flights after POE using AP.

Steve. I am sorry she had to be put thru that but in order to really help others I would like to have some info.

She traveled with A P in place & because of that was subjected to this? I thought traveling with A P in place would cause additional questions at the POE but not 1.5 hrs in secondary.

Hi Ning, hope you and family are well....sorry if I confused you, when we were together at POE in August,2014, they took her passport and "combo card" and us to the secondary inspection room, room was standing room only, about 50 people, after 2 hours the man came out, called her name, gave her back her passport and card and said "youre good". Last Friday, after a 1 hour wait in the "secondary room", the man came out and questioned Songsang about her trip, why, where, what she was doing, went back to his office, came back in 30 minutes and returned her passport and card and she came out, searched her bag also. Some people had posted that there is no secondary inspection after the first time you use the combo card, just wanted people to know this is not necessarily true.

I get secondary inspection the last 4 times I have came back at POE in Detroit.

I have had only carry on, and checked baggage to see if that mattered. There is something that triggers it. For me they make me open my luggage and check it at the secondary inspection and I am sent on my way. I think it may be cuz I have made about 12 trips to Philippiens in the last 6 years, they ask me about how much money I am carrying, and what I do for a living.

Timeline

You just never know how long it is going to take to get through customs when coming back to the US on an international flight. A couple of years ago, my wife (who had just gotten her 2-year conditional GC) had to visit her ailing mother. Upon return, my wife was grilled ("processed") for two hours at SeaTac airport by CBP. Her bags were dumped out, searched, then the contents just thrown back in. They were checking the linings of her coats, and her books were flipped through "just to make sure she wasn't trying to sneak anything in....A real nice "Welcome back to your new home." :protest: Yep, a 46 year old Chinese former high school teacher who just arrived here on a K1 visa six months earlier is a real threat.... :diablo: Thankfully, she took it in stride, sat down, and kept asking if there was anything in particular they were looking for, she offered to help find it for them.

We live in interesting times.
