Got EAD, went to change SS card name today

Just sharing the info for benefit of others...

1. My fiancee (at the time) received her SS card only 5 days after she arrived in US.

2. After we got married, we went back to change the last name

3. After couple of weeks, we received a letter stating that we need to

bring the original (or certified) marriage certificate

4. We brought that to the SSA office

5. Waited for another 5 to 6 weeks, and then went back to SSA office.

Now they tell us they have no outstanding case in the system...

likely because it was rejected.

After I complained about not receiving any rejection letter,

the clerk explained that anyone that applies for the SS name change

before they get the EAD or green card, will be rejected.

I complained, then why did they took our name change application

and also had us come back with the marriage certificate.

He didn't have answer to that other than to explain that

all requests will have without the EAD or green card (for the name change).

6. So we went back to the SSA office with the EAD card today,

and this time they took her SS card (unlike last time).

This tells me the SS clerks know that steps 3,4,5 will fail

but they do it anyway. What a stupid process!

7. They told us that likely we will receive new SS card (with the new last name)

in 2 weeks, but could take up to 4 weeks.

8. Afterwards, we went straight to the DMV to get her Learner's permit,

and they tell us my wife must bring the SS card...but we just turned that in

to SSA office! So it was a wasted trip.

9. However, since the SS card had her maiden name which doesn't

match the EAD card, I think DMV would have denied us and

we would have to go back after she gets the new SS card with matching last name.

Hope this helps others that are just behind my processing timeline. l

Glad we decided to wait after we married to apply for the wife's S.S. .. no issues or confusion... just the long wait in line. She received her card in the mail a couple weeks after.

How many days left in your i94 before you go back to the SSA... Coz me after our wedding we went to SSA then applied my ssn in marriedname in two weeks i received my ssn... It was 67th day of my i94..

it's great that you went through 'the process' - as your experience echo's the stuff I wrote prior, for the 'why to not attempt prior'.

I mentioned, prior, not to make the attempt until she has a federal ID in her hand, an EAD card or greencard, that has the new married name in it.

Sorry you had a wasted trip, but in the same breath, why not take my advice prior?
