Are you asking if your son needs a passport to enter US under K2 visa? Because a passport is required for any individual to enter a foreign country.

In Bubba Gump's situation, a passport will be required. However, there are many situations where a passport is NOT required to enter a foreign country (Schengen area and other regional agreements; alternative documents acceptance, etc.)

Is it required that a 6 year old on a k-2 visa have a passport . I know it is a good idea but my question is it required in the Philippines.

Without one it is going to be hard to; 1) have 6 month validity left on the passport (requirement), 2) affix the visa in the passport. And of course the mega obvious, no one can travel internationally without a passport ;)

... can't travel between the USA and Canada without a passport even.

By land, as an American citizen, you can show a proof of your citizenship (could be your Birth certificate), a Nexus card or an enhanced driver's licence (if available in your state) - http://cbsa.gc.ca/travel-voyage/ivc-rnc-eng.html#a1a

If you are a permanent resident, you can also travel back and forth with your Permanent resident card.

Being this is the Philippines forum I don't think that really matters or is pertinent.

Ahh of course for Schengen members, travelling in and out of those areas wouldn't require a passport for travel purposes..since they are functioning as a single country (in the context of travelling). So let me rephrase my statement in a proper context, a Filipino citizen is required to have a passport to travel to any foreign country. And as far as I know, American citizens also needs one to enter any foreign country...except US foreign territory which again makes sense.

And I confirmed what Hank_ said about Americans needing passport to enter Canada. I went for a vacation with fiancee and her family in Canada around Christmas 2013 and Border Patrol asked for their passport..... *shrug*

So not many situations you are not required a passport......

Bubba,

Also don't forget that in addition to the passport, he'll need CFO exit stamp, as will your fiancé.

Europe under the EU and other areas.

This is why Europeans and visitors can cross EU borders without having to go through passport controls anymore.

Again, as Hank said, not specifically pertinent to this discussion as this is the PHL regional forum and we're not discussing generalities like the US-Can border or the Schengen Area in Europe.

Okay, I'll put my nerd glasses on and tell you where is the "Schengen" area. It's about 20+ countries in the Europe region which agreed to create a common area without internal borders. Thus, citizens from this participating European countries can crossed each other borders without passports. For visitors going to Schengen area that requires a visa, a common Schengen visa is all that require to visit any country that is part of the Schengen agreement. So if you apply for a visa in French embassy, then you will be issued a Schengen visa, this same visa can be use to enter Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Italy, Germany etc...just to name a few of the popular countries in Schengen area. And I found out today that the Schengen agreement was named after the town of Schengen in Luxembourg where the agreement was signed.
