So....online shopping (U.K websites)

Any Essex girl worth her salt will understand a penchant for Jane Norman clothing...

I have ordered some clothes online (JN can deliver to the U,S) but that the U.S may place import tax/clothing tax on the clothes and I may have to pay a fee. Has anybody had any experience with ordering from a U.K website and then having it shipped to the U.S? I don't mind paying the 9% tax (oh, Illinois...) but do you think there is going to be a big kerfuffle about it? Will I have to go to some scary dingy government office and answer question as to why all the clothing is leopard print?!

I have ordered clothing from UK websites before. It arrived pretty promptly and there was no additional fees. The company had filled out a customs sticker on the front of the package. As mentioned here, in general you will probably get a card once it arrives at your post office, and that is where you go to pay, should it ever even need to be paid. http://www.cbp.gov/trade/basic-import-export/internet-purchases As long as the item's value doesn't exceed a certain quota it is unlikely you will have an issue, but even if there was a fee, paying it is pretty straightforward.

I just had a delivery from UPS from Holland, the items were on sale and cost me US$120, however, it was noted on the commercial invoice that it was valued over US$200 and the UPS driver told me I needed to pay $45 in duty and 'brokerage' before the package was handed to me.

You can decline receipt of the package, and I did, mostly because my new cheques hadn't arrived yet, and they only take personal cheques or cash, no debit/credit, but partly as I knew I shouldn't have to pay the fee.

The only way I managed to get out of paying , was due to it being an error on behalf of the shipper as they put the before sale value, but it took 4 days, about 20 phonecalls and numerous emails to get it fixed and its being delivered to me today without the extra fee.

Make sure anything you order is less than $200 in value, per order and you won't have to pay the brokerage. I'm in TN, and our tax is less! If I had to pay the fee, it would have been cheaper for me to split the shipment, and pay 2x shipping costs, than the one + import fees.

I have ordered from the UK ASOS (when their items have been more appealing than US ASOS) and it always says extra charges will apply over $200 so if you're under that you should be fine

As others have said, under $200 is fine. I order things all the time because i find the clothes in my local area absolutely vile. Its cheaper to pay postage from the UK than drive to a big city to get normal clothes!
