What type of work can I do on a TN Technical Writing visa?

Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

I'm considering applying for a TN visa in technical writing, because I want to get some temporary experience in the publishing industry in New York City.

I have a bachelors degree with a minor in English and a minor in Visual Arts. I have 7 years experience writing professionally in communications for all kinds of writing, including technical writing.

The question is, how broadly or narrowly does the gov define technical writing, and can I apply this to a job in traditional publishing, most likely as an editorial assistant?

That sounds probably a little too far from technical writing to qualify. However, you can't just apply for a TN visa (or TN status at the port of entry) -- you need a job offer, so it totally depends on how the employer writes up the job description.

It depends on the type of job, the description has to indicate what technical writing you will be doing - then it will be up to the NAFTA agent to determine if that fits for your TN visa

Traditional publishing doesn't seem to fit on the surface however.

Thank you to both of you for your answers. Do either of you have experience or knowledge of what the government defines technical writing as? The information I've found so far is pretty vague. I guess I mean what the guys at the border will require. I mean there must be some official protocol that they will follow in reviewing my documents, related to my technical writing experience and the job description.

You might want to take a look at information from the US Dept of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook for what they consider a technical writer does.
