To use the VWP you need ESTA.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

VWP is Visa Waiver Program whereby you can visit without a visa. Need of a visa is waived. VWP requires ESTA authorization.

He has a VISA so won't be using Visa waiver. No VWP, then no ESTA authorization. Got it?

Cancel the return flight with the airlines before it's travel date.

If he is traveling on a K1 visa then no ESTA (Electronic Ststem Travel Authorization) is required.

The ESTA is only used while traveling as a 90 day visitor on the VWP (Visa Waiver Program)

MAKE SURE he cancels the return trip as soon as he finishes his travel! Get physical confirmation from the airline!!! People have been incorrectly flagged as leaving the country due to them being booked on the return flight.

I don't think you want the hassle of explaining to USCIS how he is in the country when the airlines has him out of the country.
