which btw.. the 'gangsta' clothing is not cheap at all.. so not every good for nothing criminal can afford to buy a mark ecko sweatshirt.. i even buy 'gangsta' (the name u call it, because it's actually called urban clothing) and im not a criminal..

Agreed. The wife works at a major high street department store, and that stuff isn't cheap at all - $200 for a pair of pants...

As to how you determine 'suspicion' I never looked twice at most of the "urban white kids" in my hometown centre. Of course when I saw a teenage youth wearing a bomber jacket with a scarf around his face loitering in the dark in a bridge underpass (well known for "muggings") I figure "he isn't collecting for the red cross". He wasn't either ;)

I think you mean uninhabitable ;)

I'm not going to pretend that it isn't a grey area, but neither am I going to deny that unconciously racist attitudes are present in a surprising number of people.

yes uninhabitable..

Coming from Australia I was shocked to see that so many parts of this country are run down slums. I just think Americans are so used to it that it has become the way of life. Most US cities are run down and don't even come close to comparing to European, Asian or Australian cities. I look at the cause and the solution. Others simply chose to ignore it..

Black, White Hispanic, Umpa Lumpa whatever.. People here have to get over this race ###### and move the country forward. Rather than holding people for ransom for the past, for their own gain..

how?

do you think that todays teens, whose parents lived still in a racist and discriminatory era (50's-90's) are gonna tell their kids 'hey son, what happened to me no longer happens, so suck it up, racism no longer exists'.. what base do they have to tell their kids to move forward and stop looking to the past? they don't have one..

i don't think it's that easier for them to 'move forward' as many critics say..

Exactly. Race is still a major dividing issue in this country which is exacerbated in no small way by socio-economic disparities. You can't pretend that those differences don't exist, and that if people just "pull themselves together" they can be overcome. We already have politicians who think presentation is more important than what they actually do.

If only Americans traveled more often. Then again you can definitely see the difference between worldly Americans to your never been out of town Americans..

Nothing to do with race but rather more to do with class.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

They're rather interchangeable these days IMO - as its non-white communities who overwhelmingly occupy the poorest socio economic groups.

I think we need to clarify what we're talking about - on the one hand there's the sort of profiling which pertains to active police investigation of crimes in which there is a reasonable reason (for example, an eye witness account) to suspect say, a black guy in an orange sweater - vs. unconscious value judgements (where no crime has been committed) which lead some cops to pull over a group of black guys in a car for no justifiable reason.

Zactly! This argument someone caught its tail and keeps going in circles.

yeah.. if a black guy with an orange sweater was a suspect, then looking for black guys with orange sweaters is not discriminatory because you're following the description.. but if a cop is patrollin around and stops a bunch of black kids because they were outside chillin on the street, using his biased judgement, then that's when racial profiling is wrong..

same thing as in the southern states where they pull 'illegals' just because they look of hispanic descent, and they've fukced up pretty bad because there are tons of USC that are from hispanic descent and look like 'mexicans' but are not illegal..

that's very different from a cop searching only hispanics and blacks just because 'the statistics' say its more common for them to be criminals..

I was listening to something on the radio about LA, apparently if you are black and want to live you do not go south of 120th Street.

As far as I can tell there is much more racism between Black and Hispanic, if whitey was involved I just can not imagine it would not be headline news.

I have a friend who teaches in a very rough area, interesting cultural mix.

Bottom of the heap are Pakistani/Bangladeshi, Blacks and then Whites slightly above, then a fair way ahead Indian with Asiatics at the top, they have a fair number of Vietnamese boat people.

All about attitude.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Truth at last it IS all about attitude and one day who knows we may even change yours ;)

One wonders why if you have such a negative attitude towards non white people why you would even want to live in the USA? Perhaps those abos were too soft a target. Just out of interest, do you espouse your views in the street, and I do not mean in the bar full of racist cronies I mean when there is a black guy on one side of you and a Hispanic on the other? Or do you save your vitriolic nonsense for the other Internet warriors  No need to answer, we can all pretty much work it out
