Well, according to both Bush and Pelosi, it seems that reinstating the draft probably won't happen. I certainly hope it doesn't, anyway. I'd hate to see such a thing come about...

yea, not that a bunch of fat alchies or crackheads are gonna help a lot if they get drafted.. LAWL

Well, that's also the problem. If a bunch of people were to be drafted, it'd reduce the effectiveness of our military. Right now, we have soldiers who want to be in the military; a draft would force those who have no interest in being there to be there, and they probably wouldn't perform quite as well. I'm not saying that draftees can't do as well as enlistees, but human nature suggests that people won't do as much or as well in something if it's not something they really want to do in the first place.

Actually, the above is part of the reason why my husband - who was career army (and originally drafted) and now retired - supports the draft. He feels that the US army right now is filled with 'Go get 'em gung ho' people who are willing to fight anywhere and any time even when it isn't the best choice. Having a drafted military make make those in the voting public and the government - especially if their children are drafted and not able to avoid fighting because of safe other assignments but made it to the danger zones - a little more circumspect in their decisions about when and when not to wage war. War should be the last resort - not the first. Soldiers are not expendable toys to be thrown away by men and women who have not themselves faced the same dilemna.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Testing the system would seem to suggest to me, that someone is at least considering the possibility of reinstituting the draft sometime in the not too distant future. Unless of course, these tests are regularly scheduled...

does that suggest that if we have nuclear explosion drills, like we did in the 60's, that we are planning to nuke someone?

That's hardly the same is it?

I guess you're in the more informed position of knowing whether or not these tests are regularly scheduled ;)

If I were you I'd volunteer to beat the draft. ;)

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

it shows that "the sky is falling" mentality that some have isn't necessarily good. being prepared was never a bad idea.

Sure, but it gives rise the impression that reinstituting the draft is being considered on some level ;)

As I said, I don't know if this is a regularly scheduled thing. Perhaps it is.
