How to Use Dual Passports

Hi Community,

I could use some help on how to use my dual passports correctly.

I am a US citizen and recently got my Japanese citizenship.

Since I have two passports now, I am trying to be cautious when going through airports.

I will be traveling to Japan very soon, and transferring planes in Canada (which apparently has US customs).

MY QUESTIONS IS: Which passport should I use when leaving the US and entering Canada? Japan or US?

I imagine I should show my Japanese passport because my final destination is Japan, but I am not entirely sure.

I also know that I should use my US passport to leave the US. Will that be a problem when I enter Japan, as Japan requires me to use my Japanese passport?

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

All the best,

Benjy Uyama

You need to use your US passport to enter the USA, but the only person you are showing a passport to while leaving is the gate/check-in agent. For the security check, you'll use whatever one has the proper name on your ticket. It really doesn't matter as America does not have exit controls like some other areas/countries (I'm looking at you Schengen Zone).

I've left with just my British passport enough times and come back in on the American one. It has never been a problem.
