Let's see "veiled" put in quotes too. He comes out and says he blames the media and then says some pretty disgusting things about them, making it obvious he has no idea how the media does its job and what code of ethics it works with.

the media has a code of ethics?

Yes it does. Reporters (at least in the UK) are bound by journalism association codes of ethics, then there are specific articles of law, as well as the specific editorial guidelines of the paper/news network they are working for.

Its a self-regulating industry - that's essentially what the term "free press" means.

I think it's sad that Gary's boss was so unfairly maligned for having a positive outlook.

What a bunch of ####### this is...pullin apart his every word..throwin all sorts in the mix. You don't like this guy? Then don't you fkin work for him..

Well his "positive outlook" does include a veiled indictment of alleged liberals and the media.

That gets a big yawn from me.

'don't lose sight of how good we have it' ....yeah that's a horrible indictment.

if it gets a yawn, pops...perhaps cocoa and a nap will do? :P

At the end of the day, my point is...OHMYGODHEDISAGREEDWITHLIBERALS!!! Someone shoot the fcuker! NOW!

I mean really  get over it

Get over what? I have no problem with "being grateful for what I have", I just find the argument in which he uses a Newsweek poll (which pertains specifically to the performance of government as an indicator of "where the country is heading") to be a little simplistic and unconvincing - IMO (I repeat, in... my... opinion...)

The guy is mixing sentiment with politics - and trotting out the same tired old nationalist-populist rubbish about the evils of the media and "liberals". As I said, I don't have a problem with "being grateful, being proud" and what have you - I just don't find his justification particularly convincing.

BTW, this thread could use a little less of the melodrama that seems to infect so many others. Just a suggestion ;)

Who cares? Do you really care what Gary's boss thinks? So what? he quoted a poll you think was incorrectly used. And?

You're sick of the 'liberal' same old same old...but that won't stop you from throwin out the same old same old 'neocon bushbot' sh!t. So see it for what it is..a neverending bipartisan pizzing contest that will never ever ever get anywhere. I'm sure every person - or most of them - would say they are sick of the generalizations...but they are stereotypes for a reason...they didn't just get pulled out of someone's azz, you know.

So in closing....Gary's happy, his boss is happy...so all's good. And if anyone doesn't like it....tough sh!t ;) get over it!

the need to tear down this guy to berate him for being positive/sentimental and nostalgic/conservative/friendly/saying something negative about the media (quick, someone call Oprah!)/whatever has taken this debate into such ridiculous territory. For the people who have such a massive problem with the fact that guys like this exist, and they are happy, and they have workers who enjoy going to work...well they *maybe not you* need to get over that.

I think we should all have a UFC fight type match and see who the survival of the fittest is.

A little ol fashioned beat down is what I am up for at the moment. Lets settle this fair and square.

But before we do that...I need you pot smokin hippies with no nut sacks to sign this waiver stating you will not sue after I pound you into the ground like Ms. Dash (Trademark).

As I said I have no problem with his sentiment and "being grateful for what you have", just that I find his rationale for it a little naive, but that's not unexpected considering the nature of the piece.

If you (and Gary) are surprised at some of the responses to his statement then perhaps you might want to look back a few pages and see who it was who started with the labelling...

MEMO FROM MY EMPLOYER

Memo to all employees:

In order to assure the highest levels of quality work and productivity from employees, it will be our policy to keep all employees well trained through our program of SPECIAL HIGH INTENSITY TRAINING (S.H.I.T.)

We are trying to give our employees more S.H.I.T. than anyone else. If you feel that you do not receive your share of S.H.I.T., please see your supervisor. You will be immediately placed at the top of the S.H.I.T. list, and our supervisors are especially skilled at seeing you get all the S. H. I. T. you can handle.

Employees who don't take their S. H. I.T. seriously will be placed in DEPARTMENTAL EMPLOYEE EVALUATION PROGRAMS (D.E.E.P.S.H.I.T.). Those who fail to take D.E.E.P. S.HI.T seriously will have to go to EMPLOYEE ATTITUDE TRAININ(E.A.T.S.H.I.T.)

Since our supervisors took S.H.I.T before they were promoted, they don't have to take S.H.I.T anymore, and are all full of S.H.I.T already.

If you are full of S.H.I.T, you may be interested in a job teaching others. We can add your name to our BASIC UNDERSTANDING LEADERSHIP LIST (B.U.L.L.S.H.I.T).

Thank you,

BOSS IN GENERAL, SPECIAL HIGH INTENSITY TRAINING

(B.I.G.S.H.I.T)

P.S. Now send this S.H.I.T to 5 people, who need S.H.I.T in their life, just not the same person who sent you this S.H.I.T They have already had their fill of S.H.I.T

 It's nice to see you here in OT!:yes:

His argument or the argument being made is that if you complain about your quality of life, then you're just being ungrateful for what you've got and that it is entirely up to you the individual, whether you become financially secure or not. While I realize you and many others buy into that viewpoint, there are many Americans who not only call it BS, but can demonstrate personally why it's BS. Lisa, you always talk about your disdain towards people blowin daisies up your #######, but interestingly you don't approach this syrupy, feel-good rhetoric with the same contempt. It's an ideological argument and his preposition has polarized the issue. Can people move up the economic ladder through their own perserverence and hard work? To a degree, yes. Is it entirely up to the individual? No. Shall we discuss why?

Good point - I don't see why people are complaining that this isn't a "cat thread" and are surprised that some of us want to discuss it seriously. Why did Gary post this on the forum if he didn't want (and certainly if he didn't expect) people to comment on it?
