You have a short memory. The thread title rule ain't that old. I remember the fun times when we could start threads with titles that were dripping with bait. AJ was a true master of that art.

China, who we used to sneer at for shoddy products and low-tech low-paid labor has now not only surpassed us in Gross Domestic Product, but it is the world's largest holder of USA debt. My God, the humiliation: borrowing from the Chinese whom we so looked down upon.

Our media is pretty relentless in framing anything pertaining to China as bellicose, immoral, and wrong. But they've been investing in mines, energy, industrial production, and high-tech too. Quality has vastly improved over the years. At current growth rate differentials they will be twice our size economically in about 20 years. Four times our size in less than 20 years more.

Add to that India, the rest of Asia, South America, etc. and the U.S. will have its commupance if it doesn't voluntarily give up empire on its own.

Historically, all empires have over-reached. The military commitment was too vast to maintain the extent of the empire, and along with profligate military spending comes profligate bread and circus domestic spending too. Financial implosion is what kills the empire, after which it cannot sustain its military.

Absolutely every empire was convinced of its invincibility too.

They are….in some….but not all aspects. Just the way it is.
