Egypt is fuming over a competition to choose the world's "new seven wonders," deriding it as a marketing stunt that demeans the pyramids of Giza, the only surviving ancient wonder.

"They are the only one of the seven wonders of the ancient world that still exists, it's ridiculous, they don't need to be put to a vote," Egypt's antiquities supremo Zahi Hawass was quoted as saying in local newspapers.

Culture Minister Faruq Hosni echoed the complaint, describing the project as "absurd" and its creator, Swiss-Canadian filmmaker Bernard Weber, as a man "concerned primarily with self-promotion".

[...]

"This is probably a conspiracy against Egypt, its civilisation and monuments," wrote editorialist Al-Sayed al-Naggar in a leading state-owned daily.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Some ppl might saw the same thing about Zahi Hawass (the antiquities supremo) . . . the entrance fee for the latest touring exhibition to hit the States cost alot more than many ppl could afford . . . don't say it probably wasn't worth it, but I think I've seen all that stuff in Egypt now, hehe!!! Unfortunately, there might be a lot of ppl here who didn't go see it and might not every see these things. I think he probably needed all that money to help preserve some of those items because the Egyptian govt. sucks in the way it treats these antiquities too . . . so Zahi does actually care. Also, I went to a lecture that he gave in Dallas a few years ago . . . an interesting and dynamic man!!!

I definately think the pyramids in Egypte are one of the great wonders of the World...but for them to be PO they were not automatically named?! I mean its contest for goodness sake, to bring the World together. And clearly Bernerd Weber's organization started the contest to support their efforts to restore monuments. And not that Egypte needs the publicity but I think this contest probably brought them some extra revenue. They should be honoured and proud instead of PO ...

Y'all don't realize its practically the national sport in Egypt to argue as loudly as possible over whatever subject be at hand... which could simply be a spoon laying innocently on a table... IT'S WHAT THEY DO. (I'm married to one. I know.) :P

Talk about an inferiority complex. They have the freakin' pyramids!!!!!!

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

isn't Stonehenge an ancient wonder?

The ancient wonders are all associated with the classical European civilisations. Those civilisations had little exposure to the stone age people living in Britain at the time.

But Stonehenge is certainly as old as the pyramids, if not older.
