This is quite a worry.

My wife has NEVER filed any tax returns with the IRS. To be honest, this has come as a bit of a shock to us.

My wife is 28 years old and has been in full term employment for for 7 years with a salary ranging from £17k to £25k (so roughly $28k to $40k). Is there a chance we could be hit with a significant tax bill? Obviously she has paid all of her UK taxes.

Probably not, the threshold is higher than that. But she still has to file and there may be a penalty.

I doubt there will be a penalty. Foreign exclusion is about 90k$. My wife filed back for 4 years without the penalty....for now:)
