actually, nessa is right. anyone can land a plane. now if the plane is still in one piece after the landing, that's another matter :P

Then it could be argued that planes practically land themselves. Eventually...

The airline said only that the pilot suffered a “serious medical problem.” Continental believes the pilot died of natural causes, Osorio said.

hmmm, any passenger plane these days can take off, fly to its destination, and land and doesn't even need a pilot, that is if you trust a computer to adjust for weather, and wind shear at landing and take off

NO... not ANY just properly equipped aircraft can do that. I hate when people make mis-informed blanket statements such as this. Who do you think you are anyway? An employee of Cessna or something?

"Natural causes" doesn't HAVE to mean old age. In fact, "natural causes" can include -- but are not limited to -- cancer, stroke, heart attack, heart disease, etc. Getting hit by a bus is not a "natural cause" nor is getting shot or stabbed; having a heart attack is a "natural cause" for death.

We don't know what the pilot looked like, so he could have been a fairly young individual...only in poor health. Of course, if that were the case, he shouldn't have been flying an airliner full of people (likewise if he was very old) since he'd have been a danger to himself and everyone onboard.

I can't comment from experience about taking off, flying or landing an aircraft (I've never done it with the exception of flight simulators, but I don't think those really count), but from what I've heard and read, doing all of the above can be quite challenging depending on the circumstances present. Even if the situation is perfect, there's still a lot of stress involved.

If a person were to work for The Cessna Aircraft Company, at One Cessna Blvd, Wichita KS, 67212 then they might know that any business jet made at that facilty is capable of many things, especially if the consumer was willing to pay for them. Maybe thats why their Citation X business jet is the fastest most relaible business jet in the world. And why The Cessna Aircraft Company controls 65% of the market share of business jet sales. Of course thats if someone happened to work for The Cessna Aircraft Company, A Division of Textron. However; a person with an MBA in Finance might know something about market share and stocks. If I knew somebody in that field that is? lol

Funny how many people think they could fly a plane without training, as a pilot I have yet to see one that could, Much less land.

Most people think its similar to driving a car, it is...in the same way chewing gum is similar to calculus.

This guy knows how to fly a plane.

True, but there might be this said MBA who spent ten years in airline management who might be an equal in knowledge to said purported Cessna Employee, in fact, said MBA might be superior in basic knowledge, because said MBA would have never made such a lame mis-informed statement in the first place. Just my $0.02.

purported MBA might have vast superior knowledge to any aircraft employee. The employee only has rumors and company data to go from, no actual flight experience

Pilots have to have full medicals every few months to prove they are fit to fly, if I recall correctly. Whatever it was that killed him must have been a surprise and pretty quick IMO.

Full class A medical for Captains every 6 mos. and FO's are annual

YMMV

Absolutely fwaguy! Also I could be wrong, I have been many times but I know of not one, ZERO- production aircraft that are capable of executing a takeoff, true a few have ALS (not autoland)

but a pilot is still very much needed unless of course you dont care where it stops...the ALS simply guides the aircraft on the localizer and glideslope to the runway threshold IF the airport is so equipped...

So if I post the address to the white house can I be president??

a first class medical is required for airline pilots if the pilot is over 40 its valid for 6 months

if hes under 40 its valid for a year (or it was when I was under 40...LOL)
