Canadian passport 5 or 10 years?

Hello fellow Canadians,

I need opinions here. I will be filing for a k-1 visa in the next few weeks we plan to get married next July. However I need to renew my Canadian passport, it expires in December 2014. We now have the option to renew for 5 or 10 years. If I get married Summer 2015 and apply for AOS as soon as we get married, do you believe it would be more cost, energy, and paperwork efficient to order my 10 year passport now?

Just looking for insight.

Well by getting the 10yr passport it would save you having to renew it from the US in 5 yrs, plus it will cost more to renew it outside of Canada.

But if I choose to become an American citizen.... still on the fence about it but pretty sure I will follow through. How long does that typically take? I have not researched it yet. I'm in the craziness of K-1 visa and planning a wedding I haven't had the courage to look that far down the future yet.

You keep ur Cdn citizenship even if u become a USA citizen....thus u can keep ur Cdn passport......

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

It's about 3 yrs after you get your GC. I never renewed my Canadian passport I just use my American passport.It's just too darn expensive to have both for the kids and I.

Thank you. So weird to think I will one day have an American passport :wow: sometimes it just hits me! I'm sure I'll get used to it lol.

Passports are expensive especially if you have kids and I'm sure it's easier to use your American one when travelling and going back home to US.

I did this. Mine was a year to expiry when I applied for the 10 year one. It was only like $40 more (give or take a few) for the 10 year so I opted for that one, after seeing what they charge to renew in the US I wanted to defer that cost as long as I could.

I applied for the 10 yr before starting the process. Just seemed easier to not have to deal with it... especially since it's only a little more to get the 10 yr and then you won't have to worry about during the K-1, AOS, citizenship, etc

Do you plan on changing your name after you get married? Then you will have to pay the $160 again for the 10 yr.

If you plan on getting an American passport then get a 5yr. Just my opinion.

It's no big deal to travel on a passport in your maiden name. You only need to carry a copy of your marriage certificate. Save the money and renew when it expires to do a name change.

I didn't even think of that! In Quebec women never change their names and I often forget that elsewhere they do lol. And yes I will be changing my name. But if like Ontarkie said it's not an issue to travel it doesn't really matter. Anyways I will be gettting my citizenship as soon as I can so I'll use my Americano passport.

So many decisions to make between visas, and wedding. I just don't want to be a bridezilla lol!
