Not sure if this is the right place for it....

Recently got my conditional GC and planning on traveling later this year. Would it be possible to travel with these documents and would it be any hassle to enter USA etc due to name change?

Marriage Certificate issued in USA

2 yr conditional GC with married name (maiden hyphen married surname)

foreign passport in maiden name

airline ticket with married name (maidenmarried name together as airlines do not allow hyphen or space in names I'm told)

I really didn't want to pay to get new passport which I only got renewed a year ago (valid 10 yrs) and all the hassle etc. Isn't having a marriage cert sufficient?

please advise. I got the ticket already and now stressing if should go through hassle and pay for passport change...which wouldn't even match the airline ticket perfectly as airline ticket supposedly can't have hypens or space....

all this married name change thing is pretty confusing....

please advise. I got the ticket already and now stressing if should go through hassle and pay for passport change...which wouldn't even match the airline ticket perfectly as airline ticket supposedly can't have hypens or space....

all this married name change thing is pretty confusing....

Enjoy your trip.

I would check with your airline about how they handle the name being different on the passport and the GC. Typically the airline ticket must be in the name used on the government issued ID used for travel. For international travel that would be your passport. All the GC does is get you back into the US--i.e. the airlines allows you to board the airplane and the CBP lets you enter the US. The most problems will be with the airlines. It is recommended that you take along a copy of your Marriage Certificate to help show you are the same person. At least change the ticket to your maiden name so it matches your passport. Some people have no problems with the ticket in the married name and the passport in the maiden name and others have had a world of trouble. Having an issue while travelling is very stressful and you should do everything in your power to avoid this issue. I would call the airlines and see what they recommend for the name on the ticket and if they say it is okay I would then check with the next people you have to deal with which is the TSA. Then passport control in your home country. Each one has a say in how easy or difficult this will be if the names do not match.

I would pick either your maiden name or your married name and avoid the confusion and possible hassle the hyphenated name may cause you when you travel internationally, but it is up to you. Just realize that you may have problems or you may not--it will really depend on the person you are dealing with.

Can you use example names for clarification purposes? Also, did you change your name in your native country as well?

Also, I don't have experience with this but I would echo Dave's comment; foreign countries (including your own) will want to see a passport and go off that name, as will the airlines for any international travel.

Keep us posted!
