Hi, my wife had received her green card about 2 months ago and her name was misspelled. We sent the green card back for correction after we had gotten her a stamp in her passport that is equivelent to the green card. We are preparing to travel soon and went to the Norwegian embassy yesterday in Houston for a visa. They told us that the stamp did not have travel permissions and that they are used to seeing a sticker that grants permissions for reentry to the U.S.

We were always told that the green card itself allowed her to work and travel. The man said that it does allow her to stay here and work but to his knowledge it needs to indicate that travel is allowed. He did not sound 100% confident so I wanted to see if anyone here may have any info? Thanks much.

The stamp she got is a Greencard and works the same.

But you were talking to the Norwegian embassy, not a US CBP person.

What country is she from if she needs a visa for Norway?

PI?

Okay, so you want to get a visa to Norway for your Ukrainian wife who is a US LPR.

The Norwegian embassy is likely going to want proof of her LPR status, to help make their assessment about how likely she is to leave Norway at the end of your trip. The GC by itself does not allow her to go anywhere, it just allows her to travel back to the US. The Norwegians aren't going to know all the US rules.

I would show them some official information about what the I551 stamp is, to help them understand. It is not really their business, or anything to do with them, but they want some proof that she will not stay in Norway, and US LPR status is good proof of that.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

No, had a brain fart, Ukraine not PI.

I 551 stamp is a one year GC.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Oh, ok. I just looked at the i 551 and it says 'Employment Authorized' which is why he witheld the visa. Im not sure if its supposed to say Travel authorized also. Under the stamp, USCIS wrote i 90 pending in red ink. Im assuming thats because we sent the green card back for replacement.

Yes, he said he just needs proof that she will be allowed to re-enter the US. So he said he would like to see a stamp or to hear from the government that reentry to the US is allowed. I called USCIS and they gave me the number for Customs and Border Protection. Hopefully they can help with some documentation.

He could have just googled I 551 stamp.

So it is a comprehension issue?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

I really dont know. He just told me that he needed to see a sticker or hear from the government that she can be let back in the US or that she can fly to Ukraine. It looks like he's done this for a while so Im not sure why he wasnt confident on the i 551's permissions. :/

She has a Ukranian passport, why can she not fly to Ukraine?
