Data is always backed up routinely and stored off-site. The federal government has regulations and laws about the backup and storage of data; the feds back up more than corporations do.

Section
1.10.3.2.3 (07-08-2011)
Emails as Possible Federal Records
of the IRS Email Guidelines:
http://www.irs.gov/irm/part1/irm_01-010-003.html#d0e801

3) If you create or receive email messages during the course of your daily work, you are responsible for ensuring that you manage them properly. The Treasury Department’s current email policy requires emails and attachments that meet the definition of a federal record be added to the organization’s files by printing them (including the essential transmission data) and filing them with related paper records. If transmission and receipt data are not printed by the email system, annotate the paper copy. More information on IRS records management requirements is available at http://erc.web.irs.gov/Displayanswers/Question.asp?FolderID=4&CategoryID=5 or see the Records Management Handbook, IRM 1.15.1 http://publish.no.irs.gov/IRM/P01/PDF/31421A03.PDF).

4) An email determined to be a federal record may eventually be considered as having historical value by the National Archivist prior to disposal. Therefore, ensure that all your communications are professional in tone.

5) Please note that maintaining a copy of an email or its attachments within the IRS email MS Outlook application does not meet the requirements of maintaining an official record. Therefore, print and file email and its attachments if they are either permanent records or if they relate to a specific case.

Off course they are lying. You don't just lose 1 persons E-mails. Subpoena the IT guys. someone will tell the truth sooner or latter. Hello banes-Oaxley

There must be some bad stuff done by some powerful people, cause they are sure hiding something

Why do we as americans take this, Using Govt agencies to target people of a certain belief, then refusing to testify and hiding evidence. Watergate was not nearly this big

 this is getting better by the day. emails aren't stored on your hard drive. they're stored in the providers servers and a copy is on the recipients providers servers (if using a different provider). + like everything else done online, the NSA has it recorded too.

It's possible inter agency e-mails are stored on the same server, but they are backed up and data stored off site. It's total BS

Great question... Why do we as Americans take this......???

other countries would have riots, demonstrations or even a coup.

Obama and the democrats are quite insightful... they give to the poor to keep them happy and they do not take away too much from the rest so we concede... so they borrow and spend...

The man who promised the most transparent government in history seems to be shrouded with the most secrecy, and convenient explanations... Obama should be applauded for his ability to purposely lie to the American people and still the majority loves him.....

and the rest of the world continues laugh at America...

The liberals that voted him in will call you a racist if a person voiced disagreement with him. That is why I am the head racist on this forum

All that would be jack dandy and sniffy except that a user's E-mails are not stored on their local hard drive and even suggesting such preposterous horse doo doo is a clear sign of a cover up and as well known as the fact is, why is no one screaming

Any IT person knows that you don't store anything of any importance on a local hard drive. They are all stores on servers and backed up regularly.

Looks like you have bit the hook of a bright and shinning lie

What's not yet hit the fan in the media is just how "inbound" and "outbound" communications are passed from one user to another in a corporate environment with several 'layers' of protection used to prevent intrusion from bad guys on the outside, and to prevent data loss from stupid people on the inside and outside.

The kind of protection used at the IRS is about as tight as it gets. They monitor inbound and outbound communication every micro-second. Any bad known IP or MAC address is blocked and an attempted intrusion logged and monitored. All websites and activity by every single employee is logged and monitored. Advanced Content Filtering is employed by complex devices that look for numerical and written sequences. Anything that looks like an SSN, credit card, name, and a host of stuff that goes on forever is spotted immediately. Everything, and I mean everything is monitored. This monitoring is not done by a device with lights and bells and whistles, but it's monitored in a War Room by dozens of human beings watching everything, every moment and responding to everything, every moment.

Email, whether inbound or outbound starts from a machine, passes through several layers of protection, proxy servers and firewalls before it's allowed in or out. Is it saved? Oh, you betcha it's saved. On the user's machine. Well, yeah, it's there too, but the record lives on the many layers of monitoring devices and tape backups. Anyone who logs on and does anything to change, delete, or modify a record is stored forever. You just can't get rid of that stuff no matter what.

This scandal is not about a few rogue agents. When the cover gets off this mess, there will be several arrogant people in high places taking seminars about how to pick up a bar of soap in the shower.

Seriously you can't believe that.

Here you have a story involving a lawyer for the Teaparty, and reported by Fox. It must be unassailable!:rofl::rofl:

Did you read this part of the article?

A computer crash wouldn't usually wipe out email — except that the IRS had a policy that only 500 megabytes of data could be stored on the email server at any one time — and that, if this limit was hit, older emails would have to be moved to the employee's computer.

Didn't the IRS back up its email?
It did — but only for six months. After that, the backup tapes were taped over "for cost-efficiency," the agency wrote. (They've since changed their policy.) As mentioned, Lerner's computer crashed nearly two years before the scandal broke, so those backups would have been long gone by then. IRS employees are also supposed to keep hard copies of some important emails, but, as Philip Bump of the Washington Postexplains here, the policy is vague and it's not clear whether Lerner saved any.

If you go back to my previous post, it will likely be confusing to a non-IT person. What's not yet reached the press is that there are not only redundant tape backups that are monitored and not erasable, but there are dozens of devices that capture and save everything that moves on the network. That information is captured and saved as to the sender, recipient, date, time, IP address, mac address, content, whether it was read, and whether it was deleted on the user's machine, and so, on, and so on, just like the energizer bunny. Every email is there and it's there not only for months, but it's there forever. It's the damnedest thing really that those high-tech network communications experts don't tell people that.
