Preference for non-American mates

Funny....the quote you're quoting has him answering MORE specifically than you do. he's "caucasian American"....she's only "caucasian" and he doesn't specify what "ethnicity" (using your definition of ancestral nationality and cultural identity).....and you're complaining that people are still asking for clarification on your incredibly non-specific "ethnically American." Ethnicity as defined by one social science measure (US Census) is strictly: Caucasian, Black, Asian, Native American, Pacific Islander, and Other. Using that definition I don't see "American" listed. As you've yet to completely clarify (and no, your "Americans are perceived as having blah blah characteristics" isn't a definition)....his answer is more valid than your own.

I'm not complaining, but I do find the question intriguing.

Ethnicity is not defined by race, btw, altho there can be a racial element involved.

I have never in my life heard "ethnically American." It doesn't make any sense. It's a phrase you created out of your own prejudice and feelings of victimhood of prejudice, IMO.

A mind reader, are we now? From now on, should I take into account that if Alex hasn't heard of a thing, it can't possibly exist?

I think you're trying to justify your slip of the tongue or, uh, typing fingers.

Since I have repeated it more than once, and hold to it, it is clearly not a slip nor a typo.

believe me, geg has no feelings of victimhood

That was a puzzling leap. I'm also compelled to ask why the growing hostility toward my self-definition? Surely, it doesn't have an affect on how anyone else defines themselves.

Has anyone even attempted to research the term?

Well, I didn't have a preference for any nationality, I just happened to fall for an American man...

a couple of my younger cousins are also involved with American men... I guess I started a trend or something in our family

I don't think it's just that my wonderful European husband is so gracious, good-hearted, patient and considerate of me. I've heard other women make the same comment about European-born men.

Oh well - I guess it's not good to generalize. Eye wide open should be the rule of the day!

Interesting... because I'd say the exact same thing, except I'd substitute 'American' where you have 'European', and, after a conversation with a woman at work the other week, 'American-born' where you have 'European-born'. She was assuring me (apparently having had, um, some experience in the field) that I'm lucky to be with an American because they're so much more thoughtful, considerate, and generally appreciative of the women they're with than their UK counterparts! I'm not sure about that, as I only have the one American man to compare to the men I've been involved with before, so all I know is that he is perfect for me, where they weren't. Like you say, though, it's not good to generalise - just wanted to comment as my experience would be just what you've posted, in reverse! :)

Maybe it's because when you hold out this long for someone (visa process) and brave all the cultural differences, they have to be something special. Maybe that's why people get this perspective? Based on their own and observed experiences? eh

Well, I wouldn't do this for some loser, that's for sure!

Do you think there are people who end up with a foreign-born spouse because they can't get a date in their own country?

my dad once told me that he thought I was desperate and settling for David... I told him if I was so desperate I could have found any old guy in my hometown... why would I go through all this if I was settling....

this was of course before he met him.... now my parents love him

OMG this started off as a pretty simple question... When did the Moral Patrol Show up ? :ot:

Why mock me for my opinion? And what's this have to do about 'moral patrol' anyways?

That's just plain rude and uncivilized. You don't have to like my opinion, but as an adult, you shouldn't mock me for it either.

Asking for clarity shouldn't be taken as hostility. It should, instead, be taken as "asking for clarity."

And a quick scan of available materials indicates that the term "ethnically American" is either used in a pre-defined manner e.g. "for these purposes meaning of the northern European caucasions that settled the United States.", is used as "American ethnic" followed by a sub-group (such as white, Asian, etc.), or is left undefined from which a person could, presumably, wish for a little clarity.

Or were you referring to the definition of just "ethnic"? In which case you're both correct if you're looking at culture, and a bit off the mark as you've described yourself as being born in the USA...which would fall under the 'national' identity category in the broadest terms.

I'm not seeking anything other than clarity here, and I'm trying to show how a term too broadly defined detracts from the question at hand. The term "American" represents too much of a nationalistic identity rather than an "ethnic" division. The United States is too young a country, and frankly too diverse a country, to have that applied as a catch-all. For me I think that's the major hitch.

Can it be broken down more? I'm not ethnically Floridian. And I'm definitely not ethnically Broward County. And there's no way in heck I'm ethnically 113th street. Forget about the 2300 block. Do all of these divisions have their own cultures....probably. But that doesn't make them ethnic.

I remember TracyTN once saying that her ovaries would fairly spit eggs whenever her fiance' spoke.

I melt when Dan starts talking. When I stay with him at his parents house and it is time for bed, I sleep in his parents room. His mum won't allow me to stay in the guest room. Dan has his own room and for the respect of his parents, being in their house and so on, I go ahead and sleep in the room they give me. I stay with Dan until 2 in the morning and I usually want to stay with him even though he's ready for bed. When we kiss each other goodnight, I don't leave. The way he says shoo is adorable. I kiss him goodnight over and over and he finally says SH- HOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D Sometimes, I do get my own way. :innocent:

The question at hand is "Preference for non-American mates, Is that why you're here?".

The location of my mother on the occasion of my birth isn't the primary factor for how I define myself; in fact, it is a very minute factor.

The perception that America is too young a country to have an ethnic identity is belied by the fact that Americans have little trouble perceiving and distinquishing ethnic characteristics of other "young countries" to its south or even to its north. It's just difficult to see it in your own group.
