Hey there,

So seems like we are on the same page (not on the thread...the topic). :) So I think (again, with my confused state of mind) that if you are showing their CRBA, meaning you are trying to show the US border customs that the kids are US citizens, then they need their US passport. You are showing the CRBA in order for them to avoid visa issues. Which is logical. To my logic however, if you are showing CRBA for them to avoid visa issues when "immigrating" with you to the US (I put this in quotation as they are not really immigrating) then they need their US passport. I feel like the canadian passport "speaks" against of this. Again, I think and again...with my confused state of mind. :)

I appreciate your time and responses ( even with your confused state of mind). I did go to the consulate today and they too said my children MUST have the passports, so we applied for them. You were right..even when you were confused! LOL!!! :-) thank you!!

Hi again! I'm glad they answered that for you. As I wrote you before, a child who has CRBA has US citizenship, and a US citizen must enter the US with a US passport. The only reason I was not so sure before was because I thought that maybe there was an exception for Canada. Good luck with everything!

I think that's like the best combination one can have in life: confused, but right! That's me...and I think I'm okay with that. :) Phew! Take care and all the best! :)

Not true! Children under 16 can cross the US/Canadian border with their parents with just a birth certificate...I've done it. Not to mention the various other forms of identification that is accepted, like enhanced driver's licenses. Passport is not the only option.

Not sure why they told you that...read here:

http://www.cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/whti-program-background

Last line says: U.S. and Canadian citizens under age 16 may present only proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or Naturalization Certificate.

That's what the CRBA is.

Hi thanks for your response. Maybe it's a case of "cats and dogs don't have the same luck". I have crossed the border several times with my children, but always had to show their birth certificate (long form) and passports. When immigrating I am assuming is much different because the CO stressed that in all documents shown they MUST ONLY identify as AMERICAN and must have a passport. Not saying what you have been doing is wrong or that you can't this was just my experience and just what I have been told directly from the horses mouth, so I think it's safe for me to just have the proper documents just in case (even though it killed me to shell out all that money).

Hmm....this is where I'll keep my mouth shut, my hands tied back to prevent typing, and my confused state of mind hidden in the dark...I'm not sure when this comes to "immigration" that they can still go through the border even if they are under 16...but really, I've got no clue. >.< I think Rlelle, just listen to me (just kidding!!!!)...listen to what the officials told you, and just play it safe. Better to do extra, then getting turned around because of it. So if I were you I would just get the passports, on matter how much more I would need to pay...in the long run, they'll need that anyway, plus, getting turned around the border, all that time/money/hassle/stress seem to be more than the amount you're paying for the passports right now...but this is just my opinion...you know, its source is from the confused state of mind. :) All the best! :)
