Ha! Maybe we'll see you there. We've been pretty consistent over the last few years with being MLS cup contenders. ;) We USED to have a hockey team and a damn good one at that - the Houston Aeros. They got sold and transferred, last year? Went to a game with a friend ... not my cuppa.

Hopefully so! I read about the Aeros folding last year, weren't they in the AHL? Looks like I'll have to travel to Dallas at least to watch the big leagues. Have you ever been to an Astros game? We drove past Minute Maid Park quite frequently, that stadium is BEAUTIFUL.

Ah yeah, sorry. I don't follow hockey, so I didn't even know there were different leagues. haha.

I'm not a baseball fan either, but I've been to a few Astros games (even played the national anthem for them in 8th grade when they were still at the Astrodome). I actually used to live downtown really close to the park and would sometimes get to see the fireworks from the games on a clear night. The tickets are dirt cheap because they sucked for a while, but they're getting better this season.

I'm all about football and more into soccer because of the hubs. Rockets games are high energy and fun too! Have you gotten a chance to go to the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo yet? I got to take hubby and his dad for the first time this year and they both loved it. :) They got to see some stereotypical Texan sports. lol

I've been to Astros games at Minute Maid and the Astrodome before that. They can close the roof on rainy days. Love baseball, but I'm American. My husband likes it now too, once he understood it. You're not going to re-create England in Houston, so maybe learn to love the Astros, Rockets, and Texans despite their losing, just because you love sports. Gives you something to b1tch about with the neighbors and co-workers.

We have been to Dynamo a few times. I thought it was kinda fun and festive with the group seating of the Texian Army and El Batallon, who sing, make music, and chant the entire game. We took a British nephew to a playoff game last year. He started off saying it was lame and Chelsea was sooooo much better. But he was singing and chanting before long and seemed to enjoy the moment instead of pining for Chelsea.

Ice Hockey would never garner much attention in Houston. It's big up north because kids actually learn to skate and learn to play the game and grow up with it. I guess rich kids with Yankee parents could find an indoor ice rink if they lived in a big city.

In Houston kids start playing baseball as tots. Lots of little kids also play soccer on Saturday mornings. But by Junior High School, the cool kids play football. High School football is big when your kids get that age. If they don't participate playing, they may be in the marching band or drill team (dancers) or cheerleading at the games. College football is great too.

I hope, with time, you find a sport to enjoy in Houston.

haha, yes! All 3 of my sisters and I played in band and I had to go to every stinkin' HS football game when I was 5 - 18, so I was hooked.

I cannot stress this enough - College football games > NFL games. It's a completely different atmosphere and there is a VERY strong rivalry between some schools which creates more excitement. Since most fans of a certain college team are alumni, there is a very strong personal connection to the team, so they are more passionate about that team than say, a regional NFL team. The tailgating is ridiculous for some schools and the traditions and chants are a lot of fun too. I come from a family full of Aggies (Texas A&M) and those games are pretty intense! haha. Still want to experience an LSU game (brother in law is an alum), I hear their games and tailgates are crazy!

desismileys_6666.gif Whoop! I turned Aggie fan even though I graduated from the University of Texas. First husband and daughters went there. I don't know if my English husband quite gets it, but he does have an Aggie t-shirt. College football is so much better than NFL.

Luckily my fiancée is pretty good in terms of understanding my sayings either that or she pretends! However I've been quite good trying to pronounce stuff correctly and talk a tad slower. Can imagine having to explain stuff like what a 'bird' is and not in the avian type.

Been there hahaha Chels laughed at me.

On the sporting front, I love football, Arsenal fan all of my life (FINALLY THE TROPHY DROUGHT IS OVER) but I also love watching American Football. I agree College games are fun, but if you have a passion for the tactical sides of the game, the NFL is immense.

I'd really like to go to a Texans game when I get there, I'm just worried her dad will end up ostracising me as he's a Cowboys fan! I saw the atmosphere from a college football final on one episode of Fry in America - complete with a military flyover. There is nothing like that here at all.

I've never really followed any English sport; my interest in football has always been half-hearted just so I have something to talk about with my father. I've always enjoyed American sports - my brother and I used to take our catcher's mitts and baseballs into school rather than a soccer ball, and I was lucky enough to play ice and roller hockey here for a while in my teen years, so I think I'll be more than happy with the variety in the area. I consider myself extremely lucky to be moving somewhere with so many major league teams.

I'm sure there's something that makes Arsenal fans attractive to Americans, there's loads of us around on VJ. We even had our own little clique in the I-130 filers group on FB

I'm not going to tell my wife about Sp**s because she might do the same to me lol. She already knows that I hate Plymouth and brings it up just to wind me up :ranting:

Funnily enough, I took this picture of a random car last time I was in downtown Houston. My brother-in-law is an Arsenal fan so thought he'd find it pretty cool.

Nice! Gig 'Em! And a Longhorn turning into an Aggie?! :o haha. I know the Aggs took that rivalry much more serious than t.u. (had to) ever did.
