Social Security Office says they can't view if a name is in SAVE DB?

Based on some of the posts I've been reading I decided to go to the Social Security office early to see if my fiancee's name was in the SAVE database. We brought her completed SS-5, Passport, Birth Certificate, I-94 printout, and RM 10211.530 webpage printout. I asked the clerk if they could look up her name in the database to see if it had updated and the clerk first started saying we needed to be married (which I knew was wrong) then the clerk asked for her SS-5 paper in order to submit the application for SS# (which I wouldn't allow because I read if they do it manually it could take months) so we then asked to speak to a supervisor.

The supervisor came back and said that they can't look up her name in the SAVE database unless we commit to submitting the SS-5 application because it costs them money to use the database. She then said wait 15 days and come back and file when it's "Most Likely" in the database?

Is this correct? I know the guidelines say wait two weeks but I assumed people who were getting their SS# within a few days of arrival were having the office check the database before filing the application. So I'm going back in two weeks like the supervisor and guidelines suggest, just wondered if anyone had anymore information about the SAVE database procedure because I'm hoping we don't have to blindly apply and take the risk of the Social Security clerk having to process the application manually through DHS if for some reason she's not in the system. Also our marriage certificate application for the state of New Jersey is asking for both social security numbers so I was assuming she had to get her number before obtaining a marriage certificate?

With the electronic I-94, I don't think you need to wait 2 weeks anymore. Just apply. Good luck.

Agreed with Harpa. I applied mine a week after POE last December 2013. I did not encounter any problem when I submitted the SS-5 and I-94 and the clerk just looked at my passport. I think she made a copy. I'm not entirely certain about the "manual" thing with the submitted SS-5, but it is one of the requirements in applying for SSN anyways. It wouldn't take months even if so. I received my SS card after a week from application. Maybe you can try it again. Also, make sure that you should have at least 15 days from the I-94 expiration when applying for SSN. All the best!

hi everyone , i just approved but want to know if once i get my ssn card can i work with it please? whats the process please?

No, you can't work yet when you received your SS card. You have to apply AOS first (after you received your marriage cert), and with it, file for the EAD (employment authorization document) and AP. The costs of the latter 2 are free with AOS.

Check out the guides for AOS from K1 for more details: http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1k3aos

You can also apply for SSN even before marriage: http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

Congrats on your approval, btw! :dancing:
