Updating SSN card after EAD issued

I'm heading to the SS office tomorrow. I've read on here before that you're supposed to change your SSN once you get your EAD, then your green card. I have my social security number which I received during my I-94 period in my maiden name, now my EAD has arrived in my married name.

I'm going in there tomorrow to change it - do I need to take anything in particular? Is there anything I need to know? What should my new SS card say? I'm assuming it won't have the "valid for work only with DHS authorization on it". I'm just not sure what updates it's meant to have.

It will still bear the endorsement "Valid for work only with DHS authorisation" because you are presenting an EAD with it, not a green card.

You will need your EAD (obviously) and your marriage certificate to show them if you wish to have your card renamed into your married name from your maiden name. The number will stay the same.

You'll need your marriage certificate in order to update your SS to your married name. The rest remains the same. The "valid for work only with DHS authorization on it" thingy won't be removed until you get your GC. When you get it - go back to SSA office to update your SS card again....Actually, your suppose to inform SSA when you become a citizen as well. That something I didn't know about and haven't done for almost 10 years after my naturalization. Found out recently, when got married and went to SSA office to change my last name.

Thanks guys. I'll go in and get my name changed tomorrow then, then go in again once I get my GC to take the DHS authorization part off it, then again once I am a citizen.

Also another quick q, do they take your old SSN card when you update your name and you wait for the new one to arrive? Or do you just keep it and shred it once the new one gets in?

They don't make you surrender any existing cards.

I went to the NYC one and they took my old SSN card from me, so all he gave me back was my marriage cert and EAD.

Perhaps its a seperate system in diff offices, but they definitely too mine and it took about 3 weeks to get the new one.

That is what I had been wondering about. I have had my GC for six months now but due to my work schedule I have never had the time to go back and have the wording removed. Thanks for the info Hypnos.

My husband's company HR was all over him when he got his GC last year remaining him to get that wording removed.

With all due respect I disagree. Residents do not need DHS authorization to work, as well as citizens. In fact, those (LPR and citizens) are the only 2 categories who do not have the authorization wordings on their SSN cards. Therefore, it can/has to be removed upon becoming a resident.

You can go and get the wording removed with a green card, you just don't have to.

Well, we went in today and not really sure what happened. Long story short, she asked me if I'd dropped my middle name and I said yes, so, for example, my previous SSN card said Jane Joan Smith, now my name is Jane Smith Brown. She didn't seem to ask anymore on that, that was fine.

She asked what status I am in, I said I was on a K-1, and am currently in the process of applying for a green card. She took a screen shot of my EAD and marriage certificate and said she has to send off copies of my stuff to the DHS just to check they're alright with them, and then my new SS card should come in with my new name on it and without the "DHS authorization" remark.

The receipt they gave me says:

"Before we can issue you a social security number card, we must verify the document(s) you gave us to show your Alien status with the Federal, State or local office in the United States that issued the document(s). This may take up to 4 weeks.

If the office verifies the authenticity of your document(s) we will mail you a Social Security number card. If the office does not verify your document(s), you are not eligible for a Social Security number card and we will inform you of this in writing."

Then it goes on to say I can still work while waiting for it to be issued. She let me keep my old one while this goes through.

Your new card will say "Valid for work only with DHS authorization", as that can only be removed if you are a US citizen or an LPR and you show them your green card.
