someone told me ages ago, that some airlines allow for your wedding dress not to be added to your baggage allowance.

I would say check with the airline too. I searched it on google and found this webpage where people are writing good stories and horror stories about bringing their wedding dresses on their airline.

Might give you some sort of idea. A lot of people are saying it's much better to ship it, but that would be kind of costly from the UK i'm sure. However a lot of people said if you get a nice flight attendant they can normally put it in a closet for you or possibly even lay it on a seat thats near you so it doesn't get wrinkled up.

Last september I flew from Italy to US via London by British Airways, and unfortunately before August it would have been ok to carry my wedding dress as "carry on luggage", but after what happened last year in August, it wasn't allowed anymore, so the only way was putting it in the other baggage..........I was so scared that maybe it got lost or damaged or whatever, but I got it ok, and the only thing that I had to do was going just some days before to a place where they iron it, and it was perfect for my wedding day!!!!

Good luck for whatever you decide to do. I wouldn't suggest you to send it saparately by for exemple dhl, federal or whatever because the cost of shipment, it's very expensive, since I moved to Hawaii from Italy the delivery cost was much more than the cost of my wedding dress.................no way!!!! Otherwise I would have bought here in Hawaii, right?
