My father is going to be a joint sponsor for my wife. He is filling out an I-864. He was born in Poland and immigrated to the US when he was 9 and came to the states under his parents' visa as a minor. He has been a US citizen for a very long time and will provide his naturalization certificate as well as the scan of the main page of his passport. In addition to this, does he need to send a copy of his Polish birth certificate? He does not have easy access to it right now so getting a copy will take quite some time. In addition, his given name at birth is different from his US legal name. When he was made a US citizen, the judge asked how he wanted his LEGAL name to be recorded. He requested that his legal name would be recorded as Mitchell. Mitchell was legally changed by the judge, from Mieczyslaw, which was his baptismal name, to Mitchell. Mieczyslaw is not on any other legal records that he know of.

So do we need the Polish birth certificate?

Thanks for any help!

Evidence of US citizenship or permanent resident is all that's required for the I-864. In your case, this can be done by providing a copy of the naturalization certificate. A birth certificate will not be needed.
