A television debate show in northern India has ended in horror after a spectator set himself ablaze and embraced a local politician, leaving both men fighting for their lives, police and a witness told AFP news agency.

...

A man, named by police as Durgesh Kumar Singh, emerged from a crowd of about 150 onlookers, doused himself in petrol and then grabbed the local leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party, Kamruzzama Fauji, engulfing the pair in flames.

Singh sustained burns on 95 percent of his body which are likely to be fatal, while Fauji was in a critical state with 75 percent burns, police said.

"This man suddenly came on the stage, poured petrol on himself and set himself on fire before tightly hugging one of the political guests," local photographer Pankaj Kumar Gupta told AFP.

"People were just too shocked to know what was happening," said Gupta, whose photos show the men engulfed in flames with spectators fleeing the scene.

Dramaaaa!

No, actually, that's horrible. I have seen numerous cases of VJ love problems where the Indian person says they will kill themselves and it will the other other person's fault. That's effing stupid. Why is it so rampant?

I wish the love baba would come back and give them his black magic solution.

Because taking a can of gas to a TV debate is not considered suspicious or peculiar at all, to be sure...

Indian moms do that all the time. "If you don't blahblahblah, I will kill myself". It;s a learned behavior.

God, I hate that. I would have an absolute moratorium on using suicide as a threat in a fight. That's fukking crazy.

It beats the other alternative, the honor killing.

You think so?

I know the US is on a mental health craze, but really, let's have some mental health, India. It drives me so crazy that a whole nation or continent would be so sick in the head and that's just life, nothing is the matter. We can't imagine anything better.

I do. The honor killing is much, much worse.

I'd rather you just kill yourself and not take anyone with you if you feel that bad. It's your guilt. Let it be your death and no one else's.

I guess I am confused about who is doing the killing. The suicide-threatener would kill to get their way? That's definitely worse.

Like if a girl in a village announced her marriage to a guy of a different religion or different caste/subcaste.

The girl's dad can do the right thing and kill himself so he doesn't have the deal with the shame and guilt and all the looks from the village elders because he clearly didn't raise her right.

Or he can do an honor killing and kill her and claim he didn't do a good job raising her but he fixed his mistake.

Both happen a lot and between those two, I prefer the former.

looks like a political assassination attempt to me!

This sounded a lot like the way they killed Rajiv Gandhi, a former Prime Minister.

He was on stage doing a meet n greet event. Outdoors. A lady came up to him holding a garland of flowers. She wanted to put it around his neck, a sign of respect. He bowed down. She leaned in. And then she went BOOM.

His body was in little pieces, all over the place.
