So I booked the new budget Norwegian Airline Long Haul. Then my poor husband has to pick up his bags in FLL and re-check in with Delta, but the cost of the flight was over $600 cheaper and it includes two bags.

I paid 340 GBP plus 6000 avios miles to book my one-way British Airways flight from LHR to BWI (Washington DC).

Without using my avios miles it was quoting me 1200 GBP for the same journey.

You can even buy 6000 avios miles for 30 GBP per 1000, so it comes out to about 180 GBP to buy the miles then 340 GBP for the flight (but before you do anything make sure to check the awards availability (you'll need to sign up for BA Executive Club for that).

I pretty much only fly BA, so I've racked up a lot of avios miles over the last 8 years or so when I joined. Also avios miles on the BAEC don't expire for 3 years, but it is 3 years from your last flight... so the more you fly the more they extend.

I ended up going for BA at £1,200 for a return, flying out on Wednesday (ticket bought last week). Pricey (it's the school holidays now), but I'm hoping that I paid for a smooth and stress-free flight so that I'm in a relatively good mood when I hit LAX.

He was almost denied boarding for not having an ESTA. This even after showing the lady his visa. He was finally given permission to board.

We paid $621 for the flight.

Glad your husband had a good flight. Really pi**es me off when airline staff get all officious and demand to know your business and if you have an ESTA at the UK end. American Airlines did that to me and I don't see why some airlines feel the need to while others don't bother you!

Do the airlines get penalized if they allow people without proper immigration papers to board? If so, this could be the insistence especially if someone's job might be on the line if they mess up.

Well for me only AA has questioned me, BA, Virgin and Air Lingus didn't care which means it must be something airlines choose to do rather than a requirement. Definitely put me off flying with AA again as it was like don't question me in my own country! Lol

United at Heathrow knows their stuff. It is just uneducated employees and maybe just a new employee because surely the airlines with international service know the rules.

ESTA is only for foreign people using visa waiver, ie no visa to the USA.

Everyday those airlines board passengers who don't have ESTA such as--

Those with American passports

Those with foreign passports and a greencard

Those with Indian or Pakistani passports (for example) who have B1/B2 visas. Not visa waiver countries.

British passport holders who lost their VWP privileges, but managed to get a B2 tourist visa.

Anybody with a foreign passport with an ABC or XYZ visa, including K1, K2, CR1, IR1....
