Hello all,

I have a question that I was hoping to get help with.

I am living and working in South Korea and got married to a korean citizen. She is five months pregnant and I was hoping to have our child in the states. She is due in August and we were originally planning to go to the states in early June when my contract ends. The doctor said it should be ok, but is this timeline too tight to work out?

I did my research and know that I must fill out an i130 and possibly a k3. But I was reading up on green cards and it seems it might be better to do the i495(?) instead of consular services. Any help or advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Normal processing time for filing via a lockbox is about 12 months (+- 3 months.) The K3 visa is generally regarded as being obsolete and not regularly issued.

You probably qualify for Direct Consular Filing since this seems to be an option for South Korea and you appear to be a resident. If so, this would be much faster. 2-3 months would be a good guess, but you should search the forums and timelines for a better indication.

Andrew, question for you: does your wife have her medical exam done? All vaccination? If she's pregnant and haven't had some vaccines, she may not be able to get those shots until you have the baby right? How does that work?

I researched this a bit a while back because I was trying to see if my wife and I could qualify for a DCF exemption because the health care in the country we are living in is not at "western standards." Our "normal" pregnancy, didn't qualify for the exemption of course. :-)

What I found was that only the vaccines which were safe for pregnancy would be administered. The examiner could declare the others as not necessary. She will still need the chest x-ray which seems to be a concern for some people.
