Hi All,

Had a quick question for everyone that I hope isn't a big deal. My wife and I recently started the journey of getting a green card. I'm a USC, so I'm pretty new to this whole process. Our questions are two fold:

We sent in our huge pack with separate money orders. For the I-130 - $420 for myself. For the I-485 - a $985 money order and a separate $85 money order for my wife's biometrics form. We also, stupidly, sent in an $85 money order for MY biometrics.

After about 11 days we called the folks at the USCIS as we never received a receipt number and we were getting worried. The guy on the phone was helpful and gave us a receipt number for our I-130. SCORE! We were happy.

On That following Monday we were expecting a letter with our receipt numbers. Instead we got a rejection notice with the $85 money order for my biometrics. There was only the standard piece of paper saying that our extra remittance was being sent back to us and there is no further action required on our end. There was no green paper attached and the only other piece of paper we were sent was a scan of the front of our package.

We called the USCIS office after we got this letter, and they said that there should be no other action taken on our end and our application is in process. I just want to make double sure that is the case as we still haven't received any letters with receipt numbers, just the receipt number for I-130 over the phone which says we're in 'Initial Review'

Finally, I want to know if it's OK that we sent in separate checks for everything. Does the I-485 need to be a total of $1070 or can we split it up like we did. The post office doesn't allow for money orders over $1,000. We figured money orders were the best route to go for this.

Thanks for all your help. This forum has been invaluable to us so far.

What visa are you adjusting from?

Hi A&B,

We were recently married, and my Wife is adjusting from a student visa. We submitted a lot more paperwork than what I listed, but those were just the pertinent to the fees that we paid.

Thanks for the answers! Really just hoping that we don't have to resubmit our whole packet.

Hi All,

Sorry for the wrong forum! Thought it was the correct one as she is going for her green card as well. My bad!

Just wanted to send through an update. We just received our receipt number for all forms filed in the mail today! We're so excited and relieved. Thank you and everyone at these forums. It has been more than helpful here.

In conclusion: You CAN send separate checks, and if one of your checks is sent back to you that's not needed, you'll be OK as long as the rest of your money is included.
