Hello,

Just to give a background, my uncle had applied for my parents for the US Green Card back in 1999 and since I was a minor then, my application was also included simultaneously. Ultimately, my green card application also got processed simultaneously along with my parents in 2011 and from 2012 I have permanently moved to US. My parents however have been trying to maintain the green card for the past 2 years going back & forth between US & India but they are not sure how much longer they would be able to physically do this. My question is, in case they decide to give up their US Permanent Residence permanently, will it affect my Green Card status? Let me clarify here that I am 27 years old and my idea is that since I have long moved out of the "minor, dependent" category status into being an adult, it should not affect my residence status in US. However, if any of you know anything otherwise, please advise on this...it would be of great help for me....thanks a lot!

Filing status does not affect anything. As long as you maintain residency in the US, you should not have any problems. If you have a conditional GC, you will have to renew it after 2 years, otherwise green cards "status" never expire unless you give it up willingly or don't maintain status.

Expiry on physical green cards are there because the cards themselves are updated every few years with newer technology and they don't want people having the same card forever, just like your license or passport.
