I am an indecisive mess.

2 weeks ago, I attended the oath ceremony and received my certificate of citizenship. I changed my name to something uncommon, but weird.

Now, I want to change my name again! (To something less weird.)

I was told by a USCIS officer to report my citizenship status and name change to a local social security office after 2 weeks or so. I want to know if there is a way to modify my certificate of citizenship before I report it to social security.

I am going to university this fall, and a new name doubles the excitement of entering a new world.

I never liked my original name, and it was unpronouncable to most Americans. Although I didn't know what to change it to. I searched and searched and searched for months until I settled for something uncommon and not made-up. And now, after the oath ceremony, I found a name that I am certain I love to have. Getting a name change is like giving birth to myself, and I know many of you in this forum understand how important this is to me.

Thank you everyone.

I found some candidate answers:

Form N-565, Application for Replacement Naturalization/Citizenship Document

NOTE: USCIS has no legal basis to change a name absent a legal document such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or a court ordered name change.

Above route is most likely a no.

So that leaves me with the standard court order name change petition?

All these options are making me remember why I chose the name on my certificate of naturalization, and that is a good thing. My "vanity" correction would cost me some good amount of time and money and that reason alone makes me happy with my original name change haha

Uh wow I didn't know we can change names for simple reasons as not liking your name. Thanks for the info. My name is hard to pronounce and read, it'll help to change it, too. Do you mind if I ask how you went about changing your name? I'm in the process of filling out my citizenship application. Thanks.

There is a space where you simply request a new name on the form . If like the OP did it has already been done and you want to change it again you can go to a court as ask for a legal name change. Most states the fees for the case are under 1000 then you have the fees to change everything else. ( passport, drivers licence and all ) so the total is closer to 2000

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

I'm one of those that do NOT understand you. But that's just me. I feel like that's the only thing you can keep as something you got from your parents as a gift. And then the other, as soon as you open your mouth people will know you are foreign (regardless of how you obtained citizenship- hence politically you are a US citizen) so the first question you'll always hear is "where are you from?"(unless you grew up here) Now, you pick up a miraculous American name while you're as foreign as one can be...I find that odd, and ridiculous. But maybe because I grew up here and that's what I grew up hearing as opinion from other people. But again, I'm not trying to be disrespectful of your choice. I am just sharing my opinion. All the best to you!
