Interview In Kyiv This Morning & Strange Request

My fiancee had her interview this morning. She handed over all the required documents and was asked only 2 questions by the Ukrainian woman collecting her docs - How did we first meet and how many times I had been to see her. The CO seemed to be in the back working on something else and never actually asked her anything and only occasionally looked up in her direction. At the end he stepped forward and handed her a piece of white paper and said the information requested could be emailed to the embassy.

They're requesting that my fiancee provide a CV/resume detailing such things as her past work experience, future work plans in the US, detailed educational history, past scientific research, intended future research in the US, any military service details and on and on....this almost seems like a duplicate of the info she already submitted in the DS-160!!!

Anybody ever hear of this being requested in a K1 interview? We're a bit confused as to why they would ever ask for this - my income is more than enough to support both of us comfortably and she's never been involved in any kind of research in any discipline.....it's just bizarre. I know the simplest solution is just to give them the info they're asking for, but it's soooooo disappointing for both of us. I slept about 1 hour last night.

Obviously she has some higher education and work experience in Russia that they may want to investigate for possible compromising US security or something like that.

Redo the info and send them what they ask.

Hi, some things i dont get.......

1. Ur profile say Russia (i mean flag under your name) and you say your fiancee had her interview in Kiev......strange.....

2. As for the docs they asked......are you sure she filled DS-160 correctly? Cos those things that you write they ask in the form, and she had to put her education, labour experience etc... if she filled something wrong or gave not enough info than probably they will ask for more info.

The woman to which she handed docs in Kiev Consulate does ask few questions and ask for docs in specific order, but she does not take any decisions she prepares papers to hand to the CO.

Conclusion, best option ever give them detailed CV, there is no point of being disappointed at all, things happen in life.... it's all relevant in any stage of K-1, plus it's always human factor that influence desicions sometimes.

No, not really strange - she is Ukrainian by birth, but during the breakup of the Soviet Union her job was located in Russia & she was told she had to have Russian citizenship to keep her job, so she has a Russian passport. Now she's living in Ukraine at her mom's house helping to take care of her mom, and yes, she has to leave Ukraine every 90 days to cross the border and then come back. I had emailed the embassy in Moscow and inquired if it was possible to transfer our case to Kyiv and they said it was no problem - and they did it quickly. Apparently there are quite a few Ukrainians that were in this situation.

Than you already answered your question, the reason why they asked for additional info is that she worked in Russia and has citizenship, so it's logic that there could be questions about that.

Don't worry, Kiev Consulate is quite easy, so just give them additional info and i am sure u'll get ur visa approved as soon as docs are presented. Good luck!

While it's been a while, we had an issue with my wife's birthday. Her birth certificate says 3/2 and her Ukraine passports and all my paperwork say 3/3. So while we passed the interview, the Visa/Passport was not at FedEx that evening. Back and forth a few times with the Consulate to find out why, since at the time we had no clue, several expensive palne ticket changes & apartments and 3 days later finally got the passport/Visas. Turns out because of this anomaly, they had to go back to the state Dept in the US & NSCIS to see if an Iryna M... born 3/2 ever had a K-1, overstay etc. Once it came back as No, it was approved.

There was a similar situation w/ a young girl who was turned away before us. Her dates of employment in Russia didn't match her passport stamps and/or date of issue. She had to go home and provide proof to support the dates and make corrections. Perhaps one of these reasons is why she was asked to provide additional info.

El Burro, any updates on your case? we have a similar situation: husband had an interview in Kiev on March 12 and was asked to fill out CV/detailed resume. the case has been in AP since then and this waiting thing has been frustrating beyond words. i am graduating next month and need to decide on a job and may be move to the east coast (in California currently), but i hate making a big decision like that only to find out later the visa is denied, in which case i'd go stay wtih him in Kiev.

Does anyone have an idea how long AP an take at the Kiev embassy? i understand it's all individual, but may be there's been a trend...

My fiancee's interview was March 6th and she was asked to submit the detailed CV/resume which she sent to them two days later and like you, our case has been in AP ever since. On this past Tuesday out of frustration I sent the Kiev consulate an email asking what the status of our case was and if there was a time frame available that she could expect to be issued the visa, and I also asked them to please cc me on any further information they needed from her. Well, I got back no response but the next day I checked ceac status again and saw that our case was updated, but still AP. Nothing for a month and then strangely updated right after my inquiry?

Yesterday I woke up to an email from KyivIV requesting additional information in the same format we used for the CV (case was updated again on ceac, but still AP). When they say detailed CV, they mean DETAILED CV. They want to know exactly what she was doing EVERY year since 1984! My fiancee also served in the Russian military for a while when she was younger (this is what really triggered the request for a detailed CV), and they want every detail about the work she did in the military and even the name and rank of her commanding officer. She never worked on any top secret type stuff, so we're not overly concerned. It probably doesn't help that US/Russian relations are strained at the moment.

I've done some research on these requests for CV/resumes, and it seems that the vast majority are eventually approved. I believe the CV requests are pretty much automatic if the applicant meets certain criteria, namely some types of educational backgrounds, past research or, as in our case, previous military experience.

If I had to guess, I would say that in my fiancee's case, we have about 30 days more until the visa is issued.

again, very similar. i wrote to the embassy two days ago, out of helplessness and asked to shed some light on the status. they updated the status for us as well, but again, to AP. and they did reply to me, but in a very generic way, saying that the case is in AP (surprise!) and that they will contact my husband with further instructions once they make a decision. he also served in the military for a long time, so it makes sense, as you said, that certain cases automatically go into AP. i'm sure that's decided before an interview.

well, best of luck with the visa and hope it takes a lot sooner than you expect at this point. post here, if you don't mind, with updates, especially positive ones!

Timeline

I was mailing them few times at KyivIV e-mail and got answers next day, sometimes two days without any problem........i suggest you call them in a few days and tell you made several inqueries via e-mail as for the case up-date and never got a feedback......maybe they will move quicker over the phone......?! (It's up to you of course, just my suggestion,) Good luck any ways, hope approval is on it's way!!!

Well, ceac status has been updated 3 times in the past couple weeks but still AP.....sigh.

I've booked a flight for the last week in May after the election, visa or no visa - just because we want to see each other. So, I hope the Kyiv area stays relatively calm.

Some action is being taken with the file, which isn't a bad thing. Thanks for the update... pulling for you here.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
