Hello guys,

I got a question me and my husband don't know an answer for. We got married in my origin country before we applied CR1 visa, I took my husband's name which had the end of "JR" means junior. In Kazakhstan's rules they base in information written in passport, they don't know this is suffix for men ONLY! So we applied for my visa with my new name A**** P***** jr.... So I got all my documents - marriage certificate, passport, green card with that name. I'm gonna apply for a 10 year green card next June but I'm totally confused what to do, I wanna get rid of "JR", how to do with that nonsense is a big question. If I go to court before applying next green card would I not have problems that there discrepancies in passport and green card (because I'm citizen of Kazakhstan and a resident of the USA)

Thanks in advance!

You can fill out the GC application in the name you want to have on the GC--you use the Marriage Certificate to do an official name change as I am sure the US will understand that there is the fisrt name, middle name, surname, and suffix "JR". Once you have the new GC in your married name minus the "JR" you can change all documents in the US--SSC, DL, etc. Once you have all that you can see about changing the Kazakhstani passport to have the "correct" name. The only problem I see is that the passport name is the name the ticket must be purchased on and when the airline employee looks at the GC will want to know why they are different--this is a bit of an unusual situation as the JR will be missing instead of the difference between married name versus maiden name. Every time I hear of these problems with the surname, I am happy my wife kept her maiden name--makes life so much easier.

You should have told the person when you applied for your new passport that by adding the "JR" it was like being called Moltov as a woman instead of Moltova, they may have understood.

Good luck,

Dave
