I am currently married to an American citizen and father of an American citizen. I left the US almost 8 years ago and have not been able to return as I have an over-stay on my record as well as a misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance. Last year I applied for a tourist visa as my now wife and I wanted to get married in the US. On the advice of the embassy, i submitted for a tourist visa as we did not have the intention of emigrating. The embassy waived the over-stay and said i was not a risk of overstay and filled in a waiver for the criminal conviction, which was denied. Now that we are married and have a child, we are looking at applying again, however, somehow during this process I had a further restriction (suspected trafficking) put on my file - I have no idea how this got there and it was not explained to me at the time. The embassy says there is no waiver for this suspicion and we seem to be at a dead-end. Does anyone have any experience in this matter?

No experience with this, but from the information in your post, you'll need a good lawyer if you have any chance.
