My fiance was previously an au pair in the USA for a year. She was assigned a social security card, and still has it. On it is says for with purposes only.

Anyone else with experience already having a social security to work in the USA?

I'm wondering if we are to go get another social security card, or if we keep the one she has already.

AOS

April 18th 2014 - I-485 in acceptance.

June 26th 2014 - EAD/AP approved.

July 2nd 2014 - EAD/AP card arrived in the mail.

August 2nd 2014 - Potential Interview Waiver letter.

Jan 22nd 2015 - Submitted service request to USCIS on delay.

Jan 28th 2015 - Answer to service request that it's still being processed, and apologized for the delay.

Feb 26th 2015 - Jan 26th 2015- Sent in EAD to be renewed.

March 4th 2015- Renewal of EAD received by USCIS.

April 8th 2015 - I-485 Approved / Welcome letter sent.

April 13th 2015 - Welcome letter recieved.

April 15th 2015 - Card mailed.

You keep an SSN forever. You update her status with the SSA, but the number will remain the same.

~ Moved from K-1 Process to Social Security Numbers - topic is SSN ~

My wife had an SSN from a previous trip to the US, so we asked for a replacement when she got here. Since she came in on the K-1 the SSN card has the valid for work DHS, whatever it says, printed on it. From what I understand, because they come in on the K-1, they still have to apply for the EAD no matter what.

Number reamins with person. Upon arrival and AoS it be exchanged for one that did not have the wording about working. However, note that to work, an EAD is needed (or a GC, whichever happens first)
