I will be sponsoring my husband (Canadian citizen) for a green card. I'll be living in the US at the time while he waits in Canada for his visa. I see that he will need police certificates. Just a few questions that I couldn't find specific answers for here:

1) Obviously he needs one for Canada and I think I know how to get this, but if someone could provide a direct link for the procedure that would be great.

2) He had a green card previously from 2011-2013 but relinquished this when we moved to Canada. Must he get a check for his time in the US?

3) He lived in Korea from 2008-2010 (He was over 16 at the time). Must he get a background check from there? If so, what is the procedure for obtaining this check?

1) When will he need to provide these checks? Does he need them right away when we initially apply, or just around the time of the interview?

2) How long must the police checks be good for? If he needs to get the one from Korea I know that it will take quite a while to sort out since we no longer live there. If we could start now it would guarantee we would have it ASAP, but just want to be sure it won't expire.

Thanks!

They aren't background checks. They are getting a police Certificate from that's countries police database. He will need Canada and South Korea yes. Go to the Canadian forum i am sure many can direct you to the fastest way for him to get. Same for Korea usually when you are out the country takes a little more work.

You have to check each countries to see how long its good for. You don't have to get now. You need at NVC months down the road (after your USCIS approval you go to NVC).

But I would check with Korea to see how long it takes to get one (some countries it takes months to get especially if you are out the country).

Here is the link to the Consulate information for South Korea here on VJ. tells you all about the police certificate you need to get.
