Legal Gun Owners Can Deter Crime, Says Detroit Police Chief

Over a 29 year time frame, it was found that states with higher gun ownership rates also had higher firearm homicide rates. More guns do not result in less gun violence and / or less gun deaths. Period. Any person with a normally functioning brain will easily understand this even without a long term study backing it up.

ABSTRACT

Objectives. We examined the relationship between levels of household firearm ownership, as measured directly and by a proxy—the percentage of suicides committed with a firearm—and age-adjusted firearm homicide rates at the state level.

Methods. We conducted a negative binomial regression analysis of panel data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Web-Based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting Systems database on gun ownership and firearm homicide rates across all 50 states during 1981 to 2010. We determined fixed effects for year, accounted for clustering within states with generalized estimating equations, and controlled for potential state-level confounders.

Results. Gun ownership was a significant predictor of firearm homicide rates (incidence rate ratio = 1.009; 95% confidence interval = 1.004, 1.014). This model indicated that for each percentage point increase in gun ownership, the firearm homicide rate increased by 0.9%.

Conclusions. We observed a robust correlation between higher levels of gun ownership and higher firearm homicide rates. Although we could not determine causation, we found that states with higher rates of gun ownership had disproportionately large numbers of deaths from firearm-related homicides.

The best way of reducing crime in Detroit surely is to make sure that there's jobs and investment. Telling people to carry guns to deter criminals is surely a step above outright lawlessness.

So the answer is if I had a job I would not kill someone. That logic won't fly.The breakdown of the moral fiber of society in the inner cities is what drives this problem. Why is it a game among black youths to "Polar bear hunt."

What drives them to attack an 80 year old white woman ... when down they kick her face in and break her teeth. ....Then do a victory dance over her dying body. . It is a common problem all over america today

I'd like you to honestly tell me that if you were born into a single parent family, the child of a 3rd generation alcoholic in a city with a low standard of living, diabolical educational outcomes and a historically high crime rate that you can say without doubt that you wouldn't be a product of this environment.

People don't have to be products of their environment, but the fact is many are. If you've not seen The Wire, it might give you some insights into how this works.

Fix the city and eventually you'll fix the people.

Randomly I had a look on another site for the UK comparison. In 2011 there were apparently 146 guns deaths (including murders, suicides etc.).

146 is a long way from 12,000...

Please take the population counts for each country, and the gun shot counts for each country, and run your own percentage calculations.

I mention this, because gun laws in the UK, where you reside currently, are different than in the USA.

146 is a long way from 12,000...

It's an even longer way from over 30,000 which would be the comparable figure if you include all gun related deaths. If gun deaths would occur in the UK at the rate that lives are wasted by guns in the US, the UK would have to have well over 6,000 rather than 146 gun related deaths. Put differently, the gun death rate in the US is more than 40 times that of the UK. And that is not at all surprising.
