No family structure makes it mighty hard to succeed. It can be done, but it is tough. Children do learn what they live with.

Bingo and what has done more to tear down the family structure of the poor?

Hint the slide parallels the war on poverty

Drugs, alcohol, single parent families, Welfare has hurt in many cases-but I won't say all or blame it on that. Hard work and education is the key to getting out, but living in a bad environment makes that so difficult except for a small percentage of people who actually have the mental toughness and fortitude to steer the course and keep moving forward. It's just two easy to maintain the status quo. What is currently being done to help doesn't seem to be working for the majority. It's time to try some new ideas.

I'd like to see able bodied welfare recipients do some kind of work or public service to earn their benefits. It would do wonders for their self esteem and actually prepare them to return to the work force. Why not have them clean up the neighborhood and streets? Do some landscaping and park cleanups. Clean up graffiti, etc. There are lots of possibilities. I think that this would help them more than paying them to stay home.

I know lots of poor people. They have solid family structure. I don't know how many poor communities you visit, but not having core family values is not one of them.

Fair question, deserves an answer, IMHO.

Yes, Danno. Exactly who are these folks you describe in your post?

Guns, drugs, and lack of opportunity. That is what is keeping poor people poor. Hippies are another story. They are just lazy ####### freeloaders.

On a serious note, I would completely overhaul the education system in this country. Take an example of what was working in the parochial schools in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in the 1960's, and apply that to today. We had huge class sizes, old textbooks, and nuns that could barely speak English teaching us, yet as a whole we scored better and went further in our education, than did our public school counterparts. The difference was strict discipline and a faculty that would not let a single student fail.

Don't be coy.

I'm talking about -children having the best advantage in life by having the parents raise the child.

Sure Blacks suffer from this truism more than any other group (due to social politics) but the truth of this is witnessed universally.

We have all seen it in our own families and those we know.

Education is the key to coming out of poverty for an individual, a family, a country. You mentioned poor people that have a good family structure and I agree with this. I know poor people who do have good families. I think the one's being referred to here aren't just poor in a financial sense. There are families with 6 kids from 6 different fathers, unknown fathers. Families in name only. Drugs, alcohol, prostitution. Not just people who have trouble paying their bills and drive an old car. I can't think of the adjective to use to describe the people I'm talking about. There are lots of poor people who have dignity and pride and who do work hard. That's not the segment we're talking about here. At least I don't think it is.

Who is raising these children, if not a parent, parents, or other family members? The break-up of the extended family began long before the war on poverty, and extends across class lines. The poor and immigrant communities tend to have closer knit families than the nation as a whole.

I'm not sure where you are going.

NO matter where people are at, they and their children do worse without intact families.

Poor immigrants who are a cohesive family are on the road to middle class (as we have seen over and over)

Absolutely, I am not trying to run down low income people,

I am saying in America by simply doing the right and reasonable thing, you will elevate your kids out of poverty ....if you now are in it.

My aim is not so much about money as it is about raising productive thriving children.... and what model universally works best.

Typically kids who grow up with a good work ethic, self disciple and a proper example will prosper in many ways.

To live a self sufficient life, looking after the needs of your family and creating that same family security for your kids,"is" success in my book.
