Harry Potter release dates are so fun. Some local bookstores have late-night parties for kids and parents the night before and it's good fun (don't ask what I was doing there...)

I remember I read the first book almost in one sitting... I couldn't put it down....

I have only read the first 2 books and part of the third one... the third one didn't seem to have the same charm as the first 2... and I couldn't get through it...

Marilyn I had the same issue with the 3rd book, but that changes a little bit before mid way through and it gets much better.

Whoo hoo! This is going to be a good July for Harry Potter fans - with the film out as well.

I agree with mags, the only way to really end this series well would be to kill Harry. Any other ending will just seem too fluffly and happy ever after for my liking. But JK is a good writer, so maybe she can think of something suitable.

Or ideally - he will kill Lord Voldemort and then decide he likes the dark arts better and become Lord Potharrtery.

Opinion question for you folks. I'm a bookworm, and will read absolutely anything really. I enjoy the Harry Potter books quite a lot. My eldest daughter (11 in May) is following in my footsteps. She's presently reading book 5, and is already asking about book 6. I had my reservations about letting her read 5 as it gets a little scary, but she read "Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry" and handled it just fine. Go ahead and let her read 6? One of the issues with this is that I'll have to wrestle her to the floor to be able to read 7 first. :hehe:

Also thinking about letting her give the His Dark Materials series a go.

I'd say 11 is good enough to read book 6. I think it's important for kids to learn to deal with death and reading a book is a good way to do it, as opposed for her loosing someone in real life and dealing with it for the first time.

I read Stephen King's IT and The Shining when I was 11 and I had no problems at all.

His Dark Materials is AMAZING, maybe you should wait till she's 12 or 13 though, I think she might appreciate it better then, as I find the story way more complex than HP.

Oh, when she's 13, give Mists of Avalon for her to read. ;)

His Dark Materials is just about the best trilogy ever written. I adore it. I saw it on the stage in London, at The National Theatre, a couple of years ago. Had Timothy Dalton as Lord Asriel and a few other names only Brits would recognise in it.

It was wonderfully done, even the daemons. It WAS 6 hours long though, but I enjoyed every minute. I took my son (who was 10 at the time) and he enjoyed it aswell.

It was an experience I will never forget.

Holy geez! You read IT when you were 11? I read it when I was 15 and slept on the couch for a week because I was scared of my basement bedroom!

And I'm jealous of mags. A lot.

I'm excited about it. I'll be picking it up Sunday, on my way home from taking my fiance to the airport for his return to the UK. I'm hoping it will help me keep my mind off of how much I will miss him.

Incidentally, I saw the new movie yesterday. It was OK, but no where near as good as the book. but then, thats always the way!
