took them 3 months to receive mine lol.

I don't know about email. It's just faster to call, then you can instantly hand over emails and phone numbers.

My quetion is the only way to get the case number is calling?

Or they send a letter?

We received a letter from the NVC with our case number. It took about a week from the date we got our case number over the phone for my fiance to receive the letter. If you aren't in a hurry, just wait for the letter. :)

Flying to Seattle on 6 May 2014!

You do receive a letter by mail with the case number after it has been assigned. You can just know the number sooner by calling. If you have the patience you can wait for it.
