so i have been (practice) driving here using my PI license when I noticed that its no longer valid. When I got my EAD we planned a trip to the DMV/DDS for the learner's permit (i wanted to be comfortable driving before I do the behind the wheel). We went in today at 830ish and there was a freaking long line. Took 2.5 hrs of waiting to get my turn. I handed my docs (passport, i766(ead), ssn card, bank stuff, healthcare stuff, i797c). The lady said that she find my immigration stuff so they have to confirm with immigration and it'll take about 5 business days. I can do the knowledge test but won't be able to give me my permit. I'd have to go back when they ask me to and wait in line. She said its becuase I just got my EAD. @_@

I do like Arizona for being fast with that stuff. Once my wife had her EAD she went down to DMV, they verified the info online, let her take the written test and had her permit... all in a couple hours.

That was one thing that really impressed me with DMV in Arizona when I first moved here. Wish all states were up to speed like that. Minnesota wasn't before I left there, not even sure if they have come out of the stone ages yet.

Back in the day I drove on my foreign driver's license(s) here for a few months until I got my EAD! then one early morning I drove up to a GA DDS testing site... showed my documents (proof of residence and ID), took the vision test then the knowledge test on a computer..waited 1.5 hours for an instructor and went for the road test...passed ...paid $20 and walked out with a temp GA license all done in about 5.5 hours yes.gif

A week later the mail man delivered my full GA drivers license in the mail good.gif.

Good luck to you.
